Im getting to play with my new card this weekend, and wondered what options i should set in the catalyst control panel to give the best performance/IQ vs speed option.

What is adaptive AA? Is it worth having this on, and should it be on instead or as well as normal AA?

i have mine settings up to 4x AA and 16x AF

which is the quality setting. it runs perfect like this. ive just moved up from the x800gto and its amazing the speed and quality of games now

Hi

cant vouch that my settings are the best but they suit me ... 4xFSAA 8xAF on a TFT native 1280x1024 .. seams a good balance but no doubt someone will say crank em up to full AA & AF ... :p

EDIT .... oh i have adaptive AA ticked on as i do think it makes a difference

My all settings in the CCC are :-

SmoothVision HD AA = ticked let app decide, slider fully left.

SmoothVision HD AF = Same as above.

Cat A.I ticked disabled, and slider fully right.

MipMap Detail = slider fully right for high quality.

V-Sync = Always on, but you can set accordingly.

Adaptive AA = ticked enabled, and slider fully left.

Using these setting i can play everything maxed out in 1280x1024 (TFT) on my x1800 XT, and the IQ looks awesome.

Obviously if the game aint got the AA/AF settings, then i would set them here also.

While im here though, ive noticed another tick box in the SmoothVision HD AF setting called high quality AF, this is not ticked, but upon reading the bubble that comes up on it, it says it improves texture sharpness and quality using a sophisticated technique compared to standard AF with potentially reduced performance, anyone know if it would it be worth ticking that also ??

Thanks. :)

I got a few new games today, quake 4 and battlefield 2, and they dont run that great at 1280x1024. Quake 4 i thought i could just max out, but when i get smoke and stuff it gets a bit manky. Im thinking its probably my p4, so ill give my current bits to my daughter an upgrade to a dual core amd setup. Ticking AA and AF to 2x with quake 4 just let it run absolutely terrible :(

hmm... cant be the x1800

must be some other hardware

Agree, played BF2 on my old x800 XT PE maxed out in 1280x1024 so the x1800 should have no trouble, i aint got around to reinstalling it yet, and i played the demo of Q4 maxed out also with no problems. :)

Ill try that suggestion m8, just tick the box, and see what happens. :D

darn ive had that box ticked all the time ... it just sounded too good to miss .. but no idea if its having any positive or negative effect ... and bugger didnt even notice settings for smoothvision ... guess i'll have to tinker with them too :D

right ive done a little test, quake 4 on ultra with the settings loadsamoney suggested, 1280x1024. Im only getting 15-45fps in total at these settings with no AA/AF on.

I wonder if its because i had my nvidia card in before, so i think ill try a format and see if it makes any difference.

okay, i think it was my memory timings, i set cpu back to default speed, ran again and the lowest it got where it was hitting about 12-13fps before, is now 48. Clocked it back up with the memory at 2t instead of 1t, and it seems silky smooth at 60fps :)

Yeah that sounds a lot better, don't know the frame-rates i was getting, but i know for a fact it wasn't going as low as 15fps, i would have noticed that lol, silky smooth all the time for me it was, glad you got it sorted. :)

If you used DriverCleaner to get rid off all your Nvida drivers, then i should think a format won't be needed. :)

@Cozman well i ticked that box, and i cant see any difference either, so ill just leave it ticked. :D

Im pretty sure it was the ram, unfortunately the cpu dosent seem to like being overclocked.

Do you bother overclocking your card at all loadsamoney? I didnt seem to have much success, so i thought i would wait for one of the new zalman or arctic cooling coolers before giving it some welly.
