Time for an upgrade from my trusty RT-N66u.

Any recommendations please? - I'm looking for a 2nd generation AC chipset hopefully.

Was thinking the Asus AC87U model? (or is there better?) - I know its pricey but I prefer Asus as the merlin firmware is spot on for my requirements (i.e. updated regularly - quicker than normal manufacturer standards with security holes addressed promptly).

What say thee? :) thanks.

Not a fan of netgear tbh bud. I do however love the Asus interfaces.
AC3200 or the AC87U I guess...pretty sure Asus or Merlin will have ironed out any bugs by now :)

Went for the netgear myself, again after reading about the ac87 quirks

someone has ported the asus firmware onto the netgear, apparently works really well
Need to get round to trying it myself!

Sorry - absolutely no idea, the thread where it is talked about is here on linksysinfo.org
Just looking at merlin's latest and the one on that link, and they are the same revision - so must be pretty quick!

I prefer the asus routers for the extra functionality and slick GUI tbh (and lurve Merlin firmware) so I've just ordered the AC3200 - Came in at just over £200 so it was only about forty quid more than the AC87.

Both the AC87 and AC3200 are different kettles of fish fyi.
The AC3200 is a 3x3 setup but can handle two separate 5Ghz networks whereas the AC87 is a 4x4 setup but unfortunately doesn't support MU-MIMO as yet (making it a bit pointless tbh as that's where the real gains are in the latest WIFI tech).

I can see myself using the two 5Ghz networks (one for streaming to TV's and one for the other slower 5Ghz devices) hence paid the little extra. I also like the added functionality of being able to check which device is using how much bandwidth and what its used on - pretty cool for when I finally give internet access to the kids lol.

The AC87 is supposed to be a better performer for range, but you guys are right - theres a lot of bad comments on various forums etc about things like lock ups and faulty ones - its not as well ventilated as the AC3200 so no surprise there. My current N66U gets quite hot when in use and the room its in can be quite hot so I think it was a wiser choice getting the AC3200.

anyhoo - hope this info helps anyone else looking to buy one of the top end asus routers
