Hey everyone, I was doing a bit of thinking about AI, and pretty much AI in most games I've played recently aren't much better than games I've played when I started.
In fact yesterday during a nostalgia run through of Populous: The Beginning, I noticed the AI brought back units from distant posts when it's main base was attacked, and was generally being clever and giving me a hard time.
Civilization IV is another I was quite impressed with, especially when a peaceful AI declared war on me near the end-game. That kind of behaviour (whilst common sense) was also discussed in my Microeconomics course of 'Game Theory' on games with finite turns - not with video games in mind, but considering human behaviour, so I was impressed when this AI back stabbed me.
In shooters I remember UT2004 had some awesome godlike AI. If you slowed the game down to 20% speed you could clearly see them dodging rockets or flak in close quarters (reminds me of agents in the matrix).
Now.. the thing is, the AI in RTS's tend to be hard because of either a) a very rigid but optimal script written by a human, ie. base layout and order of moves, planned attacks. or b) the above plus essentially cheating, faster resource gathering, unit output, eg. SupCom
Does anybody know of any games which are more impressive, or which specifically designate more resources for the AI, AI focused games?
The bottom line is, hardware has changed, graphics are better, computing power is greater than when I played Populous for the first time on a CRT, so what's with the AI? Everthing might be NEXT GEN and HD but I still see units getting stuck at path-finding and no major AI breakthroughs (to my knowledge)
Addition: I'm really impressed with GTA IV's civillian AI, combined with the physics engine. Seeing people stumble and try to hold on, or cars both obeying traffic laws, and driving around obstacles you might place before them is quite good.
Addition 2: AI glitches are welcome for discussion too, I present to you Oblivion "I love dogs"
