Best all around monitor?

Right I'm in the market for another set of monitors(2 for now 3 later).

Mainly I need a monitor for graphics work/coding and a fair amount of gaming. I assume a reasonably quick IPS would be adequate for gaming(mainly bf4).

I'm stuck if I'm honest I'm still running TN 1050p screens at home so anything would be an upgrade.

I currently run AMD so Gsync would be useless for me.

I'm not especially interested in 4K yet mainly as I'd have to upgrade my GPU which I'm not looking to spend the extra money yet until the next gen(maybe even gen after) come out.

Any recommendations?

I've been looking at either;

1440p added real estate for work and prettier gaming.

or;

1200p still 'some' added real estate and being a Dell Ultrasharpe I would assume better colour accuracy than the acer one above.

Help me wise ones :(.

Ideally I'd prefer to spend no more than £300 on each but it can be increased if something perfect is there.

I prefer 24" only due to my current screens being 22/23" slightly bigger would be nice and would prevent me having to move my eyes/head too much looking around the screen.

Sorry rookie error not giving a budget there :(.

in the 24" space i'd thoroughly recommend the Dell U2414H or Dell U2415 depending on whether you want a 16:9 or 16:10 format screen. both excellent all round screens, good default setup and performance, and about as good as you can get from current IPS-type panels for gaming and lag. both a lot better than the old U2412M by the way :)

In a larger size the Dell U2715H would be the equivalent option

Pretty much what badass has recommended.

Size comparison of 24 and 27" 16.9

And size comparison of 16.10 24" and 27" 16.9:

Honestly, I would recommend jumping to 27", you will get much better choice i.e. get more IPS screens with a 2560x1440 res. 1920x1080 is very dated these days imo and I imagine that you will keep this screen for a good few years so might as well get something a bit more future proof imo.

Brilliant thank you :).

Ive been looking around that site for ages recently didn't realize it was made by one of the OCUK lot :). Brilliant work!

Shame OCUK dont stock the U2415 to be honest I'm not sure I'd notice much difference from the extra 120 pixels height.

Hmm tough choices with 27" thrown into the mix as well.

Wish it were simple :D.

I've been running these 1050ps for years now so a while longer wont be an issue. Is there something about 1.2A+ that makes it worthwhile?
Thank you :).

It moves the monitor standard away from the legacy of fixed refresh rates and having to choose between tearing or using Vsync. The graphics card needs to support the feature, but if you plan to hold onto your monitor for any length of time it's worth holding off for.

Hmm sounds like it might be worth holding off for. I would have the money for new GPUs at that point as well. 4K may have progressed further as well by then.

note you will need to be looking at screens labelled as "freesync" then, there's a few on OcUK already. You would have to have an AMD graphics card then for that to work, and a modern one if you wanted to use that feature. The cost of those screens is considerably higher and there aren't many IPS choices either, and probably won't be for some time. i think you'd be waiting a long time to get a decent IPS screen for your budget with FreeSync support, not to mention then needing a new graphics card as well

Arrgh I was only planning on upgrading GPUs once 4k had matured and there was a single GPU that could handle it rather than sli.

I don't think freesync will matter to me as much as an IPs panel.

I will have to make the tough choice between 24" at 1080 vs 27" at 1440p then.

I would assume eye strain would be greater the bigger the monitor due to the greater area to look around. Considering I'm at this pc ~ 16 hours a day I might have to try both before I decide finally.

Thank you all for the advise.

You will get use to it, that is assuming you aren't sitting stupidly close to the monitor :p

I came from a 23" 16.9 to a 29" 21.9 and at first it was a bit daunting but there is no way I could go back to anything smaller and I sit pretty close to mine...

You always have CCR/14 day satisfaction anyway ;)

I think it will be a LONG time until 1 single GPU can handle 4k and games with high/ultra settings @ 50+FPS, not even 2 of the top end GPU's are enough for the current games let alone ones like crysis 3.

Don't forget when you do upgrade your GPU, you could always use DSR/VSR to play @ 4k on your 2560x1440/1920x1080 monitor.

TBH, this 4k monitor looks absolutely amazing, it is 40" though! Even running games in 21.9 format on it looks amazing

I do tend to sit close to the monitor about 2ft away. I'm blind as a bat even with glasses lol :(.

My fathers going to borrow a 27" from work and I'll have a play to see what it's like.

If it's too big I'll wait for a review of the acer predator linked in my first post for the 1440p aspect. Baddass will you be reviewing it do you think?

If it's poor it will be the u2414H Baddass reccomended.

That 4k nexus linked to is rather sexy though :D.

Thanks for the help everyone monitors are one of the few bits about hardware I just don't get. I am also terrified of pixel problems:(. Even one would drive me crazy but it is within acceptable standards.

That is roughly the same distance for me as well. Although I have good eye sight and don't wear glasses :p

Resizing windows helps a lot ;)

Regarding dead pixels, if you buy from ocuk and use CCR/14 day satisfaction, you shouldn't have any issues ;) Saying that, I had one on my 29um65 which was in the central area and apart from white pages i.e. browsing, word documents etc. I never really noticed it, it had to be returned for the awful bleed/glow though.

Very true there's always CCR. Just don't want to muck OCUK about as they've always been good to me would hate to have a black mark on my name :D.

Where on earth are all your icons:eek: my entire screen is covered in folders lol.

Couldn't you tell I was blind from my scores? :D.

I am OCD when it comes my desk top screen :p All the stuff I use most often is just pinned to the start menu.

hehe, your scores are certainly starting to make sense! :D

:p

Ooo come on I've just seen the U2515H an extra inch and 1440p at only £50 more.

So should I go for the extra inch and higher res? Or stay with the U2414H?

Ive read tftcentrals review and it looks positive but I don't know how to compare the two.

Help me yet again wise ones please (last time promise).

U2414H has less input lag but the contrast ratio isn't as good and of course you won't get as much screen real estate and the u2414h won't be as sharp either

I would personally go for the 25" though.
