hey guys, i did do a quick search dunno if its been asked before though, i was jus wondering what version of vista are most of you running? and shoud i get the 64 or 32 bit version?

im at uni so will be using creative software like 3ds max and photoshop, are there any performance differances between 32 and 64?

I think the main difference between 32 & 64 bit, is the Memory allowance. You can only use 3.25Gb of RAm with the 32bit, but you can go all the way upto 8Gb on the 64 bit :)

If you don't change your hardware much, then you might as well go for an OEM version. I have the Ultimate version, must be the best oem one to buy ;)

I think Home Premium would be the best all-round version. I'm convinced Ultimate slows the computer down even more if you aren't in need of things like Bitlocker/Remote Desktop etc.

what happens i was gonna upgrade to go with the version i buy, but what if i upgrade much after that with an oem? is that an issue?

you can upgrade all hardware except the mobo with an oem license. if you're planning a new mobo anytime in the near future you need retail. :)

and go for x64 if your hardware supports it. 32bit is only for slackers like me with old hardware. and lastly, just get home premium. ultimate is a waste of cash. if you need it fair enough, but if you have to ask what the difference is, then you definitely don't need ultimate. :)

thanks for the fast replys guys, ive been reading up on it and a lot of people say there are driver issues and some software issues with the 64 bit? does anyone have experience with this? or does it all run well?

Well I've just loaded 64-bit Home Premium and it sure feels snappier than the 32-bit version to me. Luckily, after a bit of rigmarole, I found 64-bit drivers for all my hardware. All the software I've put on, which is mainstream stuff like Office 2007, Photoshop, Acrobat, Nero, NOD32, etc. work fine.

Best to check your hardware/software first, for 64 bit drivers. My old printer isn't, and won't be supported, but then it's old and needs replacing anyway, so i'm not too cut up lol!

I had a few issues with my Fang Gamepad at first, but i think they've sorted out the 64 bit drivers now.. I've not really had any other issues driver wise, and i love the general feel of Vista. I think i've been using it exclusively for about a month now and the only software problem i can think of, is that Battlefield 2142 stops working occasionally. But that's down to the buggy software, and the fact that it hasn't been tested on 64bit (officially) yet.

ill have to have a good look at my gear, i use a wacom tablet aswell and a half decent scanner a lot, if i cant find the drivers id be abit annoyed, as for things like soundcards id imagine my creative xfi has 64s by now, but i havnt checked completley, anything else i should be aware of?

You could always use vLite to remove from Ultimate what you didn't need.

But I'd reckon for features to cost ratio Vista Home Premium is the daddy.

I've heard this aswell, but my Girlfriends parents PC PSU went, taking out the motherboard with it. All the other components were fine.

So I replaced the Motherboard, PSU and booted up the PC. It asked for activation and it did without issue...on an OEM license (It was a branded eMachines PC).

The replacement MB had the same north or south bridge chipset, but not both.

Still going strong and no activation issues so far

I'd have to say, that unless you are absolutely 100% sure your going to make use of all the features in Ultimate or unless you just want to say you have Ultimate... get Home Premium.

I've got an OEM copy of Home Premium 32bit running in my HTPC, and it's great. Runs very smoothly and Windows Vista Media Centre is a joy to use!

Only reason I don't have 64bit is that there aren't any 64bit drivers for my TV card yet :(

I'll be sticking 64bit in my new build in the coming months though, mainly because I'll be using 4GB of ram... and 4GB isn't supported in 32bit :-/
