Alright a mate of mine keeps complaining about his computer not being able to play Battlefield BC2 properly. He's replaced his 1950pro with a 5770 but still has something like a dual core 4600 and a couple of gigs of ddr2.

He's not made of money, so i'm wondering what's the best tri or quad core he could get to fit into his AM2 motherboard - did they ever make any AM2 phenom 2s?

Also how much does BC2 love 4gigs? or is 2 enough?

Would be great if he could pick something up 2nd hand for about 50 notes.

Can someone let me know?

Very much depends which motherboard he has, if it's an AM2 (original) or AM2+ (compatible with some AM3 CPUs). 4GB of RAM is pretty much the standard for gaming these days.

This. you'll need to find out the make & model of the board, then find out what CPU's are compatible with it. You should be able to find out what will fit it on the manufacturer's support site for that board.

it could take this one

or this one.

You'll need to find out for certain first or the PC may not boot up. The board may need a software update to accept the new CPU as well, you need the old CPU in there to do this.

Apologies if I sound patronising, didn't know if you'd done this before.

i knew that it wasn't compatible with the newer phenoms but wasn't sure if the 940? phenom 2 quad was am2 compatible. i can't see him springing for a new system and am not sure how much of a boost either of them will give him - the dual core ain't much of a bump and the phenom 1 is only 2.5...

he's not an overclocker though and won't be told...

Was that's the fastest phenom 1 they made? I suppose he could try to get another 2 sticks of ddr2...they won't be too pricey on mm i would have thought.

Thanks Grimley - don't worry not patronising - i did know to check his mobo for compatibility and possible bios update...

If hes only wanting to spend £50 and the mobo is only am2 best your going to get is the amd 6000+ there is a 65w and 95w if i remember right i had the 65w (brisbane core) and was happy at 3.6Ghz not bad for the price but wont keep up with newer chips

my quad athlon II 620 overclocked to 3.4ghz and an overclocked gtx260 plays bc2 well enough.
but i think it might be am2+??

yep just checked its am2+

Yep, although Dave did say he's not an overclocker. :p For £50 I don't think there's anything that'll give him a huge boost performance wise. The original Phenoms weren't fantastic and the top end of the Athlon 64 X2 line will only be an extra 600-800mhz or so.
