It's time for an upgrade in the next couple of weeks, What's the best chip for doing a bit of overclocking with at the moment?

why title the thread 'best AMD CPU at the moment?' and if your after an AMD processor why do people suggest C2D? could you be a little more specific? i mean do you have an AMD motherboard ready to go or is this for a new system?

I've been having a little look at prices, i reckon i can get all for around 300 quid. Now i'll only need a gig of ddr2. All the gc has to do, is play family guy, run windows, tvout (would be nice) and be able to do the whole dual monitor thing.

Ok and you need of of the below:

mobo, chip, ddr2, pci-e card and a sata drive.? Have you also considered a Aftermart Cpu Cooler?

Nice system that - that board, CPU and RAM will easily overclock to 3GHz, kicking the arse out of any AMD CPU available. Graphics card isn't up to much gaming-wise but is passive-cooled so silent for HTPC duties. Nice fast hard drive, could easily be swapped for a 320 or bigger if you want more space.

Run F@H on it :p Remember having a SETI race with you back in the day!

I'd add a tenner and pop the 7600GT in there, it's a much faster card and is well worth it. :)

Cheers mattus, i remember the seti races well. I'm still going at the moment, my poor old 2ghz barton is nearing retirement.

So that chip should clock up to 3ghz? That's a big overclock! Would that be 3ghz per core or overall ? I'm a bit confused with this core duo stuff at the moment.

What sort of temps are people getting at that speed? Is the stock cooler anygood?

It's 3GHz per core but they run in parallel so you can do twice as much stuff (Series would give 6GHz but would act like a single core).
It is a big overclock but poke around the forum and you'll see loads that are bigger e.g. W3bbo's 4GHz rig!
On stock cooling you'll be fine at 3GHz, if you try to go further then you'll defo need aftermarket cooling.
