Best AMD CPU for this mobo?

Hey guys,

My friends PC is getting a little long in the tooth now,

Its running:
Athlon X2 245 CPU
Gigabyte GA-M61PME-S2P MOBO (Socket AM2+)
4Gb DDR2 800Mhz Dual channel
Nvidia GTS 250.
400W Corsair PSU

He almost exclusively plays EQ2 in a high end raid guild and while an old game and not particularly demanding, his CPU is certainly struggling in busy raids.

He gets a huge backdated studen loan payment soon and although hes currently unwilling to do a full system refresh until next year, he wants to get something to tide over in the mean time.

EQ2 isnt particularly demanding but ideally we're looking for a decent performing Quad core and possibly a GPU upgrade too (must NOT be a 2xx series nvidia)

The main thing is the CPU.


Iv absolutely no clue when it comes to AMD stuff so hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction.


Wanting to keep budget under £200 any more and he might as well do a full refresh and go intel, as i said this is currently not the plan as he only plays EQ2.

It looks like the mobo supports Phenom quads and even x6's, might be a nice upgrade to tide him over for sub £100.

Looks like I misread the OP, yeah one of those Phenom II's for 60, then get a cheap 7850 or something.

yeh if the phenom II's work chuck 1 of them into it.

Chuck a cheap 60GB SSD in as well to speed everything up.

OK don't buy that I just rechecked the specs and it looks like both revisions only support 95watt cpus. So a 95Watt quad is ur best option. The only 95watt quad that ocuk have in is this:

Thanks for suggestions.

As you guys realised, ideally the goal is to just upgrade CPU sticking with AMD and if possible maybe squeeze a GPU in but its not essential.


He only has 6 months of uni left then goes to Dartmouth royal naval collage so doesnt want to buy a £2k PC just for it to sit in storage for the next 2 years. (Or more likely be stored on my desk )

Iv not used an AMD system since the C2Ds came out from intel and im completely clueless when it comes to their mobos, sockets, cpus etc.
