Best AMD CPU for Video editing

I have a 2yr old Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H 780G Mobo and an Athlon 64X2 5400+ 2.70ghz in my Media centre Pc with 4gig of ram and an AMD Radeon 3400 GPU. (windows 7 32bit)
I recently purchased Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 and attempted to use it on a 2min HD Clip from my Panasonic HDC-SD600.. As you can imagine it ground to a halt. My question is this, what is the best CPU for this mobo that I will at least have a chance of Video editing without having to do a mobo upgrade. My Budget is £100-£120 but I wish to upgrade my GPU as well from this budget. I have the latest bios installed for this mobo as I heard it would be able to take a 3 Core Athlon If I did this.

Thanks in advance folks.

Aye, that board will support an Athlon II X3 so long as you are using the F11 BIOS - the Athlon II X3 450 is a good chip. Though I would spend the bit extra for this Phenom II X4 840 quad core if you can, as the extra core will help with video editing performance.

That Sony software seems to be able to make use of Nvidia graphics card (ones which use CUDA to accelerate encoding to the Sony AVC format) If you think this will be of use to you then I would suggest getting an Nvidia graphics card. May I ask what make and model PSU you have before I recommend a graphics card?

It's actually the standard one that came with my antec Fusion case, think it's a 450w it's a full size one mind you. I'd rather have a low powered GPU though that doesn't require extra power other than that from the card slot.

I would probably look at getting the Athlon II X3 450 or Phenom II X4 840 and an HD6450 graphics card. The HD6450 has UVD3 which is better for media decoding than the UVD in your HD3400. The HD6450 is bus powered and has quite low power consumption.

BTW,AMD have recently announced some price cuts for their CPUs so maybe it is worth waiting a few weeks to see if they filter into retail:

Cool, thanks for that, I had been looking at the HD6450 as a replacement for my Media Centre Pc as my current card is a bit long in the tooth now :-)

The "phenom" 840 is an athlon, not a phenom despite what the box says. Do not be fooled.
I know this now but def within my budget and def worth the cash, compared to what I have it's a Rocket ship lol.
All I need to do is check I have the latest Bios, order for Monday morning and fit Tues :-)
What I was thinking is this, is the stock cooler and fan ok for a Media Centre Pc, by this I mean noise levels. Would hate to be watching a film with a Loud noisey fan :-)

Just seen this, Radeon HD 5570 1024MB GDDR3 SILENT @ £2. more than the Radeon HD 6450 1024MB GDDR3. So one final last question which should be in another section soz, but which one?

Fair enough, but the 955 has just had something like a 14% price drop which will hit in the next couple weeks. Also worth considering is second hand, you can access the member market at 250 posts so you're almost there ;)

Cooler wise the stock is a pain. If you won't mind a tower pointing upwards then there's no shortage of alternatives, if you wanted one pointing towards the back of the case then the 212+ can be had for ~£15. Again, mm would be cheaper.

If you have an antec fusion case, then one of the best coolers you can get is the Scythe Mini Ninja. Really nice CPU cooler, fits great in that case and will keep a 95W quad core cool while remaining very quiet.

The HD5570 has 400 shaders as opposed to the 160 in the HD6450. This means it will be better for gaming and probably be better for applications which use OpenCL. OTH,the HD6450 will have lower power consumption and UVD3 instead of UVD2 found in the HD5000 series which means slightly better media decoding abilities.

Thinking of Just tossing a coin now lol.

Oc's don't have this so any other suggestions that are not too expensive and will fit in an Antec Fusion Black Case would be welcome.
