I'm going to push the boat out and buy a new phone with a really good camera, preferably something with decent support and a long upgrade path too.

I'd like at least 256gb of storage, 6.5"+ screen (preferably flat, but not essential), and a fast processor.

I've been looking at the Honour Magic4 Pro, Pixel 7 Pro, OnePlus 11, Oppo Find X5 Pro, Xiaomi 12t Pro, possibly Samsung S23+, etc, any opinions or alternatives please? Thanks.

What are you upgrading from? That will influence some of the answers you'll get here. I went from the S20 Ultra to an S23 Ultra. While it was only an incremental upgrade in some ways, the camera is a definite upgrade for me.

Depending on where you work, you can get a 15%-20% staff discount. Ambulance, NHS, teachers, ScotRail etc. Stack that with handset trade-in and that brought my £1400 S23 Ultra 512GB model down to less than £1000.

I'm upgrading from a Poco X3 Pro, so most phones will be an upgrade in the camera department...

No work discount for me unfortunately, but I might be able to ask someone nicely, thanks for the reply.

I think I'm going to push the boat out and order the Honor Magic5 Pro next week, should be a decent upgrade.

Fair point about the software, I was just concentrating on the hardware.

It would appear that Honor have promised that the Honor Magic 5 Pro will be the first of their phones to receive three major OS updates and five years of security patches, so hopefully that's a step forward.

For the price, it just appears to tick the most boxes, many thanks for the replies.

Another thing to note about software updates is are the security patches monthly. Some OEMs do all sorts... Bi monthly... Quarterly etc. And are OS updates and fixes prompt.

At the end of the day all these top end phone are good, you have the returns period to make your mind up.

Looks to be monthly, but only for their 2 newest phones, including the 5 Pro, not sure about the OS updates - https://www.hihonor.com/uk/support/bulletin/

If you don't need zoom, save a pile of cash and get the Pixel 6a. IIRC it beat allcomers in Marques Brownlee'Brownlee's blind test. (Tongue in cheek comment. Well, mostly)

I'm not bothered about the zoom camera, but I do need 256gb or more of storage, and I don't want to downsize from the 6.67" screen I'm using now, appreciate that it's got a great camera though.

I actually got the 6a as a stop gap between selling my Note 10+ and getting hold of an S21/22 Ultra. It's been so good I'm not in a rush.

If I were you I'd get an S21/22/23 Ultra.

I'd only want the S23 Ultra if I was going to get a Samsung, and at around £1250, it's out of my price range unfortunately.

You can get for way less with 10% referral code, £200/300 trade in for any mobile phone (even a £15 argos brick flip phone), quidco/topcashback etc, will bring it to around £900 max

Thanks for the info, the Honour is released tomorrow, and I'm still very tempted by that one, I'll ponder it tonight.:D

And after much pondering, I had a couple of whiskies and ordered the Honor Magic5 Pro at five past midnight this morning!

£850 for the 12gb/512gb meadow green phone, free screen damage protection for 6 months, free case, free wireless charger, and free earbuds 3 Pro, looking forward to having a play.

That's certainly a lot of hardware for the money.

What phone are you coming from.?

Poco X3 Pro, had it for over 2yrs and it's been brilliant, but the camera is average at best, the Magic5 should be a massive upgrade in all departments.

Loving it so far, fantastic screen, great battery life, and the camera is amazing, especially compared to the Poco!

Couple of little software quirks when I was setting it up, but every Android overlay has those, got it set up exactly how I like it now, and it's great.

Good deal on that Moto too, bargain for someone.

The Honor should see me through for the next 3yrs or so, it's a massive upgrade from my old phone, takes fantastic photos, more than good enough for a point and shoot operator like myself anyway.

There are going to be some amazing cameras in phones over the next 3yrs too, so hopefully there's something worth upgrading to then. :D
