Motorola's used to be good but from reviews of the G73 and support, they seem pants.
Honor don't seem great at support either and Xioami have difficulty with excessive bloatware.
Samsung? Nokia?

I'm curious as I don't want to spend £1000 for something I can get stolen easily.

With Samsung you get four years of OS updates and five years of security updates, I think that reason alone is enough to consider Samsung over others. Mid range performance is good if not the best when compared to similar priced Xiaomi devices which are sometimes available with nice discounts.

I think somewhat it is going to depend on what you want from a phone and I wouldn't run out and spend £1000 for the sake of it unless you need features which will demand that price. For instance whether you want/need a higher quality camera, SD card support, gaming features, etc. etc.

I have an Xioami 8T 64GB for a few years and it's been great.
The main reason is I need more storage and 5G. The camera is great but it's lacking 5G and even with an SD card it is difficult to save to

It's also got loads of bloatware and I was looking at Motorola G73 256GB. The alternative is a Pixel 6 or 7 but they're only 128GB.

I’ve got the Samsung Galaxy A34 5G 128GB with a 256GB MicroSDXC card in it, 128GB main storage is fine for me as I don’t install a ton of apps. You can get a 256GB version with 8GB RAM and I’d suggest getting that.

Have a look on eBay can get a brand new 256GB one for £250 buy it now…

Or bid on auctions to potentially save a few quid.

Has to be Samsung. Market leaders for android. Long updates etc

some banks do a mobile phone insurance package, works out quite cheap

One thing I appreciated with the Sony phone I bought recently, it gives you options on first setting up whether you want to install the bloat or not and actually has a few useful bundled apps in the options (though in this case nothing I wanted/needed - but would be actually useful for some people). I'm kind of going off Samsung lately as they seem less and less about the end user and more about pushing whatever they want.

Same. No other option for me and apparently updates are getting longer from pixel 8.
Could probably get an older Pixel for the same money as a new Galaxy A34 256GB, but then it would be even older OS wise and receive even less updates. Still a good phone mind. Depends what your budget is and whether you value software updates.

I have an A33 (I think) from work and it's so slow. Yes depends on what you value.

Pixel 6 is 324 new on Amazon
Pixel 7a is is 399

Pixel 6 and later phones, including Fold, will get updates for at least five years from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US. These updates include security, software and may also include feature drops.

I’m happy to be able to check email, browse a few websites and use Facebook. Don’t play games, I’m not a power user. It’s nice to know I’m getting Samsungs software support for the next four years including Android 17.

I'm on my first Samsung, previously always Sony. It's an S21, had it for 18 months, and I don't like it a whole lot.

There were not many small phones available, and it was a decent price, so it was a bit of a default choice.

I'll probably end up with another Samsung next time simply due to there still being so few smaller handsets. But I'm not especially pleased about it.

The best surely has to be samsung, highest specs, generally best camera, battery life and longest software support.

But you'll pay the price for it.

Last year I finally gave in to Samsung after many years of buying other makes.
From now on I'll be sticking with Samsung and I'll buy refurbished.
I was impressed with my mates Pixel 7 also.
