Hi

A friend of mine was enquiring what the best ati card for around 50-70 bucks. I seen a few posts 7300GT was good but i think he not too keen with recent issues with some of the nvidia cards so is there a decent ati equivalent that will peform to pretty much the same level?

Cheers

Kyo

P.s PCI -E :D

X600XT I think is the closest in price, especially on the bay. An x1650XT would be a better shot if you could find one for a decent price.

if your talking new then i have to say forget ATi for that type of money, 7600GT is the way to go.

if you want to go second hand, look out for X1800GTO`s they go for around £70 to £80 and whip the balls of a 7600GT in most cases.

HIS ATI Radeon X1650 Pro ICEQ Turbo 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (RX1650P-256ICEQT)

625MHz Core, 1400MHz Memory, 12 Pixel Shaders, 5 Vertex Shaders, 8 Geometry Pipelines, Shader Model 3.0, ICEQ Silent Cooling, Crossfire Compatible.
HighTech 10+ in stock £69.99
(£82.24)

... but it is slightly over the listed budget.

yup, thats exactly what i mean :) it would stomp a 7600GT with an extreme amount of ease...

I don't think it would tbh. I had a X850XTPE @ 600/600 and it ran about the same speed as a mates 7600GT in some things, worse in others

Aye 7600 GT is 6800 Ultra performance level, it doesn't get stomped by an X850XTPE. For £45 though it is pretty darn good performance and better value than the GT at £90 :)

see above.

it is also better value unless there is one game that you really really really want to play using shader model 3, (although god knows why) in which case i would still say go find an X1800GTO for £70 to £80 as they pull more at stock than a 7600GT and clock very well, some are even capable of being opened up to full XT`s.

but if you want to buy new, then the 7600GT is the best value card for under £100 notes and the 7300GT the best value for under £60.

What am I looking at

Theres several comparisons about and the THG results are similar to them:
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2006/03/21/bfg_7600_gt_oc_ati_x1800gto/1.html

Overall the X850 XTPE turns out faster (though in some nvidia "orientated" games it is slower) but I'm not denying that. The performance is close enough in a general sense that you can say they are in a similar league.

When you said that it sounded like you were saying the 7600 GT is like a Land Rover to a Ferrari, which isn't a true reflection, it is much closer than that :D

it certainly seems to have the edge in most things and performs extremely well in shader intensive games.

HL2 @ 1280X1024 full AA / AF = 10% faster than 7600GT
Hard Truck Apocolypse @ 1280X960 full AA / AF = 19% faster than 7600GT
Oblivion @ 1280X1024 No AA / 8xAF = 134% faster than 7600GT
Prey @ 1280X1024 full AA / AF = 6% faster than 7600GT
Rise of nations medium quality 1280X1024 full AA / AF = 14% slower than 7600GT
3DMark06 1280X1024 full AA / AF = 3% slower than 7600GT

true, not the stomping i was hoping for, but never the less, they can be found for £45 to £50 which makes them a bargain. Whilst they do lack SM3 support, in reality this is small potatoes.

7600GTs overclock on average from 540 > 600+ as well don't forget to add, and there memory generally (so people have said, and both mine did when i had them) reaches 1600 (DDR), i got mine to 635 core and 1650 memory, scoring 7133 in 3D mark '05 with a single card, what does X850XT PE get?

Edit: also add 7600GTs generate little heat, have no external power connection and there small :)

true true and true.

but i got 7.1K with my X800GTO2 modded to XPTE ... i would hazzard a guess that an X850XT would be capable of similar if not better. also bare in mind not every 7600GT reaches those speeds and the owner may not wish to clock a brand new card to within an inch of its life...

the simple fact is if he is on a budget and doesn't mind going second hand and ignoring SM3.0 (which lets be frank, didn't bring much to the table anyway) the X850XT is the better option, but who knows, if he wants to go second hand he may also find a 7600GT or an X1800GTO for around £60/70 in which case they would be my first choice, (preferably the X1800GTO due to its higher performance stock for stock)

Right my friend is finally getting forced  to get a new card as some of the new games simply won't run without pixel 3 shader capability. Think i saw somewhere a x1800GTO for a decent price. that probably a better buy than the 7600 GT|GS 's right?

Cheers
