Helloooo

What would give the better performance for around £240 buying a MONSTER ATI card or two lesser ATI cards ??

(obviously buying one monster one would leave a free PCI-E slot for future Crossfireness)

Cheers

SLi mobos seems super expensive and problem wracked if the user reviews are to be trusted. (also there's not many of them compared to Crossfire)

So yeah, I need ATI :)

if you have a crossfire board with 2 x 16 lanes then two 3850 512mbs would be 180ish or so....they all pretty easily do 3870xt speeds and i dont think the gDDR4 actually does much. The powercolor 3850's memory does 1100mhz anyway, which is about what the stock ddr4 is except the ddr3 has far better timings.

Its not for me, I'm building a PC and the guy wants it "Future Proof" :)

So I am just wondering (while keeping it within budget) which is the best way.
One almighty card now with Crossfiring it in a year or so or Crossfiring it now.

Hmmmm.....

So a single 3870x2 would be better performance wise than 2X 3870XT for example ?

There also seem to be driver bugs that affect a pair of 3870XT cards, but that don't affect the X2.

It's a stonking card, and works really well. I wouldn't part with mine for anything else. :)

It's quite simply the *only* option in the £200-£250 price range. (They can be had for close to £200 in the MM)

Hmmmm.....
Give him a single 512MB 8800GT and he will be more than happy!

Two card set-ups are for the serious gamers who kill people across a large map with a single headshot and admire the lovely antialiasing and partical effects on the blood! :D

There is no such thing as future-proof, it is a term used only by a complete and utter nOObzilla.

As your the system builder its only right and proper you research your options so you build a great machine but an 8800GT 512Mb blows all no full-time-forum-dwellers away. . . totally!

With all due respect (and respect is due!) it also happens to have the most ridiculous power consumption!

Not having a pop, just an observation thats all! :)

Thoughts?

Nah it's a fair one - but if (like me) you have a good, solid PSU you'll be more than fine! :)

Also I went from an 8800GT - apart from leaving the bug-ridden nVidia drivers behind, the performance difference was really quite big.

[Edit] Actually, like skunksta - I wouldn't call it's power consumption "ridiculous"! It's higher than a single card, yes, but lower than a comparable multi-card solution.

No it dont it draws less power than a 2900 xt.And with ATI 2d 3d clocks its only higher than a GTX while gaming.

The power consumption is actually quite good on average and will vary with demand.

For instance playing Sins of a Solar Empire resulted in a draw at the socket of around 220 watts ( total system ) with my GTX it was close to 300.

In Crysis both the X2 and GTX were about equal with around 360 watts. I think thats pretty good considering the power of the X2. Also idle power is very good.

This isn't based on reviews but actual readings from my killawatt meter at the socket.

The X2 is a cracking card!

If you think the ati x2 draws a lot of power.
Then you have nightmares with the amount of power a SLI 8800gtx setup draws (as my system with SLI 8800gtx peaks at over 530+watts with only a dualcore 45nm cpu)
