I've been using the MS one for a while now, but one irritation with it is that it doesn't display all the codes at once, you have to click on each account seperately.

The google one has poor reviews so I haven't tried that.

Does anyone have any better recommendations?

I use Google Authenticator, nice and simple and just works.
Remember to keep backup codes safe ofc, assume that's what most neg reviews are about - no automatic option to backup, something I prefer

Using 2FAS which has the backup to Google Drive and can be password protected.
I had Google Authenticator, but my phone failed and lost access to it so a bit of a nightmare trying to get into accounts again.
I thought I had transferred it to my tablet, but it wasn't there either :(

3 dots menu, top right, show codes. Job done.

Was about to post the same as the above. Nothing wrong with the M$ authenticator app. Use it for work and personal stuff.

Google Authenticator:
- Google/Gmail
- Overclockers
- Nvidia

Microsoft Authenticator:
- Windows account

Is it possible to merge authenticators? It just never occurred to me until I saw this thread, as I think Microsoft told me to use the MS app for my Windows account and Google told me to use Google's for Gmail. I'm not sure how Overclockers and Nvidia fitted in though app-wise.

You can't do a "merge" but you can add accounts to any authenticator. MS authenticator has some nice features for MS accounts built in.

They all use TOTP based authentication so it doesn't matter what app you use. Personally using Authy since I can use it on multiple devices which also means I still have access if I lose my phone. Not many people like having their TOTPs in the cloud though, I have seen Aegis being recommended for privacy. Microsoft isn't that bad either and also offers backing up. Google was last on this and even then doesn't work that great with backing up/restoring.

I moved from Authy to Bitwarden as it was just a faff to have to open a password manager and then open authy for 2FA code. Now it's all done in one app.

It can also display all codes in a single view which Authy doesn't do.

It is a premium Bitwarden feature though, so will cost you a mere 2.3pence a day.
