Maybe because windows is infected thus causing false/bad results if the AV software is installed after and then run. A lot of viruses now target the AV software and hook into it too.
To answer the OP the main got AV for Linux which will do both is ClamAV however there's live DVD's

Eset NOD32 for Linux is best imho. It comes as a self-contained binary (.linux) which works on any system from Ubuntu to Arch, and the GUI is exactly the same as you'd get under Windows as they don't rely on the OS (QT, GTK etc). It's very light and fast, and not very expensive. Depending on your morals, three year keys are not that hard to find - but I'd rather support its development.
