looking to buy the best bits I can without going OTT

not built a PC for 5-6 years (currently E8400, 4GB and GTX470) so the parts I've chose are based on some quick google research and looking at the customer ratings on OCUK shop website

hadn't really set a budget but was thinking under £1k, the (fairly random) parts I chose came to just under that

using a 1900 1200 monitor just now and no real plans to get a 1440 but curious how this system would cope

Please tell me if it would be better to spend a bit more or less on any of these parts to either get the same performance for less money or noticeable performance increase for a little more money, also how compatible they all are

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £995.11
(includes shipping: £13.20)

good stuff, thanks...is the 3600 memory just overkill or is the 3000 better because of the timings?

what is the i5 6600k like at stock speeds and what is the stock cooler like? I just kinda assumed I'd need an upgraded cooler and would overclock but might just leave it, depending on how much I'd be gaining/losing out by overclocking or not

never had an AMD card but the R9 390 looks like it does better in some of the tests but not all!

when i was building my current PC the Abit IP35 Pro was a clear winner (from what I remember). was hoping the choice would be easy again! will have a good read of your review and others

do you think the 6600k is worth overclocking when using a 970 or 390 ?

pretty sure on what to get now, just the m/b I'm not sure on

was wondering tho...

do PSU's deteriorate over time or is there anything that newer ones would have that my Corsair HX620W doesn't have? (it must be 6 years old)

is there really no reason to get a new PSU?

Your PSU was a good one and uses Japaneses capacitors etc, but yes they do deteriorate.

Does it have all the necessary connectors you need, 24pin and 8pin ATX, SATA and the two PCIE for a 970/390 card.

if it came with all those cables then I'll still have them...
just a bit wary of an older PSU going faulty and causing damage to other things

otherwise I'm guessing from the comments above that EVGA G2 650w is the one to go for

I'd use that PSU until it dies. I had an old PSU die peacefully recently and it was no trouble, just wouldn't power up one day.

Also would go for 8 G RAM. When/if you need more it's an easy upgrade.

I've got the following arriving for my better half this morning...

MSI Z170A Gaming Pro - Skylake Core i5 6600K Bundle **£20 Saving**
Alpenföhn Matterhorn White CPU Cooler
Avexir Core Red Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C16 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit
Microsoft Windows 10 64-Bit DVD - OEM (because USB retail was out of stock at time)

I also ordered a Phanteks Enthoo Pro titanium green, but I think I'm going to transfer my sig rig to that and give her the Luxe and its glowing lights.;)

Considering a 980ti now.…kinda thinking I'm spending all this money and would be great to have all that power to run everything full with no worries!!
what PSU would be needed for that with the 6600k
