best bang for buck gpu

For 1680x1050 I would say a used 8800GTX or used 8800GTS G92/9800GTX

For newer cards I would not really look at nvidia as the 4830 is quite a good card for the money.

IMHO.. 4850 right now if ATI, or probably one of the 9800 range (or maybe even the 8800 range as well if you can find one cheap enough :D)

res will be 1680x1050 when i get new monitor but now its 1280x1024 was looking at 9600gs xxx edition i have only got around 50-75 to spend

For £75 i'd get either:

ATi HD 4670 512MB - ~£65

nVidia 9600GT 512MB - ~£70

Or if you don't mind 2nd hand you can prolly pick up an 8800GT/GTS for less than £75.

Quick run through based on a budget:

£0-60 - Difficult one tbh as most super budget cards will be a bit pants. In this price range you may find (new) 8800GT 256mb cards which are fine for low resolution monitors and 8800GS cards which are perfect if you fold and not too bad at gaming. The HD4650 is also worth a look although it is considerably slower than both the previously mentioned cards.

£60-70 - 9600GT (It is faster in every situation than the HD4670 so the latter card (4670) for gaming at least is pointless at its current pricing).

£70-100 - If you can find one a 8800GT/9800GT offers probably the best performance per £ in this segment. A HD4830 is also an option here although from doing a bit of digging I have found the 9800GT to be available for a good £20 less, which considering the performance difference isn't to be overlooked (also in this price range if you fold the 4830 wouldn't even be on the radar).

£100-150 - HD4850 or 9800GTX+. Whilst you can find the HD4850 for less than the 9800 it would depend on which make you actually prefer as their performance is very similar. Personally I would go for the 9800GTX+ as I fold however if purely gaming than the HD4850 is the better (its cheaper!) option here.

£150-£200 - If you can find one (which wouldn't take long) a HD4870 1gb is easily the best option in this price range. Thanks to the price increases most if not all GTX260's are now more than this and tbh not worth the extra. Also given this price increase I would also find it hard to justify anything above this card apart from the X2 variant as put simply no other card offers enough of a performance jump to warrant its higher price. If the pricing situation changes and the Maxcore variants of the GTX260 come down into this price range then they should also be considered.

Please note - all of the above assumes buying new. There are second hand deals to be had (although not many looking in the MM) however given the recent price hikes (which has filtered through to people asking more for the second hand cards) a lot of the previous 'deals' don't look so advantageous.

Hope this was helpful. :)
