Can anyone recommend any books or reading materials for a few Microsoft certs?

I currently only have an IT National Diploma and Computing HND, but I really want to expand my knowledge and get some industry certifications to make me more employable in the future. I know many people in IT say experience trumps qualifications (especially if you can't back those qualifications up), but I'm starting a new job in a few weeks as an IT Technician in a secondary school and sixth-form and--while this role will allow me to get experience--I'd like some reading material to along with it.

I'm mainly interested in learning Windows Server (2008 or 2012 -- whichever you think would be more useful at present); the follow-up Server and Desktop Infrastructure MCSEs; and the Windows 7 MCSA.

So, yeah, I'd be grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction :)

Hi

I actually found your thread by searching for someone else going through the same as me!

Im currently studying for the 2012 MCSA, and the Server Infrastructure 2012 MCSE shortly after. Ive currently got the MCITP Win7 Enterprise Desktop admin, along with a few others.

I'd say that 2008 is being used by more firms at present than 2012, but 2012 skills are starting on a steep upwards trend at the minute, which will only get bigger. I'd say do the 2012 course unless you are looking to land a job soon, in which case go the 2008 route, but bear in mind these are being retired soon. A lot of places have migrated to Win7 now, so dont expect anyone to be taking up Windows 8 in any big way - Win7 skills will be in demand for years to come.

Oh - OP, the official companion books by MS are usually good, and if you have the cash, CBT Nuggets are good also. Just search the rainforest site by the exam number to find the books, Kindle is probably best to get it on as you can sync between your mobile devices and your desktop with the Kindle app.
