Which company would you say make the best windows based laptops? I dont want an ibm one because they look like something thats from the past.

Best in what respect?

Best for gaming?
Best design?
Lightest?
Best battery life?
Fastest CPU?
etc?

Hi there

Well I don't think there is a particular best, but for all round quality, value and warranty DELL have to be one of the best.
Also Asus are pushing really hard to make some good kit and are certainly doing a good job by making some superb laptops at affordable prices.
Sony are superb as well, but you do pay a little over the odds. IBM, Toshiba and Fujitsu are all good as well, plus will hopefully all be available from OcUK soon.

The only brand I would say avoid is ACER and Rock, yes I know OcUK sell them but they just feel cheap and nasty, plus they market their product as been the best value but compare them against the DELL's and the DELL's are always cheaper on price for equivalent specification or better and with DELL you get a proper warranty that works well. :)

They look like there from the past but are very well made and reliable, Of all the laptops I've used I like IBM ones the best.

Best for gaming and battery life. I know that both dont generally go hand in hand.

Acer..are fine and offer great value for money (Acer UK supposed to be really bad customer support though)

Why do you say avoid Rock? And aren't Rock a competitor? Are you only allowed to mention other companies when blasting them?

And I wouldn't rate Dell's superior to Acer. Dell have lousy support, so don't bother if something goes wrong. You'll need a lawyer. btw regarding Dells purchased through OCUK is any warranty claims to Dell or OCUK? (end user contacts?....)

Its as if you bought from DELL, buying through OcUK gets you discount, DELL still provide the warranty. All in all DELL's warranty is good as long as you have the information to hand that DELL require which is the work number on the packaging then they are quick and dell with problems fast to a high level of support. If DELL were not good we would no about it considering the amount of DELL equipment OcUK sells.

You are correct Acer's support is poor and far worse to that compared of DELL as DELL's is good. :)

The best thing is that Acer's support line closes for lunch for over an hour, amusing when you phone them at lunch time and you get a "Sorry we're closed for lunch, call back when we're back" We're only one of the largest laptop makers in the world.

A few of the guys in the office bought Acers. 3 of which had problems with them. One guy had a really bad time with the support, he needs a replacement MB and its been taking months.

Personally I love Vaio's followed by dell.

I have an ASUS W3A (I'm using it now as a matter of fact).

I like it, it's well built and has all the ports on the sides instead of stuck around the back where you can't reach them. It's quick and the screen is good. It's not the lightest but it feels robust and it looks good.

Comparing it to my colleague's Acer next to me, I'd have this before that any day - it looks plasticky and doesn't feel as robust when you pick it up.

It has multimedia buttons on the side edge on one side and buttons for wireless, touchpad, internet, performance settings and bluetooth on the other.

The only niggle I have with it is that there appears to be no way to access the BIOS, which is a bit of a nuisance.

Other than that, it is an excellent machine and I would heartily recommend it :)

Stan :)

I have an acer, and it's fairly decent.
However, the fan design seems to be really poor as they get clogged up easily and become quite noisy.

I have no problems with buying Acer again. Still say they're best value for money though, over Toshiba, IBM etc. They might not be the "best" as in build quality But unless you're willing to pay considerbly more they're good laptops. Since specifications come into whether at any price range. I don't think the bigger names come close to price/performance ie this Acer laptop is £950 inclusive VAT..

Intel Pentium-M 760 Processor 2.0GHz, 1GB DDRII SDRAM, 100GB Hard Drive, DVD Dual Layer Drive, 15.4" XGA Widescreen CrystalBrite TFT Screen ATI Mobility X700 256MB dedicated graphics.

My next laptop will probably be one with better graphics card though.
