Best breakdown cover?

Hi

It's come that time again when my breakdown cover will soon be up for renewal.

For the last couple years I have been with the RAC. I haven't had any complaints, but then I haven't had any call outs either so I have no first hand experience of their service. I pay my money, I get my card and that's about it!

Anyway, I just received through the post a renewal letter. Very "kindly" of them they are offering to debit my card again unless I tell them otherwise.

The issue I have is the renewal price:

Membership cost: 113.50
Membership savings: 43.85
Total amount payable: 69.65

The level of breakdown cover is Solutions 1 Roadside & Recovery.

The issue I have is that if I check out the RAC website I don't seem to be able to get to anywhere near this membership cost unless I tick all the extra options which this breakdown policy doesn't include. It seems to me they've just ramped up the membership cost at the same rate as the membership savings as though I don't recall precisely I think I have been paying pretty much 70'ish from the start. I understand the need to attract new customers, but personally I think this is taking far to many liberties, particularly if their aim is to reward customers who don't call out.

So, I will give them a call to find out what's their justification for this, but first I wanted to see what else is out there. Maybe I could take advantage of being a "new customer" and perhaps get some cashback via the relevant sites too.

Options I could think of include:
- AA
- Green Flag
- Via insurance (currently with Elephant and I think they have an additional breakdown option, which I could add to my insurance policy)

Any thoughts?

The only requirement I have is that I want cover for me personally in any vehicle.

Thanks in advance.

John

Phone them up, I have been with the RAC for a couple of years, last year I rang them up and said I was thinking of going with the AA what could they offer. I have had to call them out twice and both times I was happy with the service.

I'm with the RAC. Only had to call them out once (not even for my car). Bloke came, diagnosed the problem (snapped cam belt) and called through for a tow truck which I was told would be an hour max. 1 hour 20 minutes later and no truck. Rang em back, and they said one had never been ordered and it would be a further 40 minutes. I'll not be renewing with RAC.

Parents are with The AA and they're more than happy with the service they've received.

Gave RAC a call and they won't budge on price. I could get AA for about £35 inc cashback, but not sure if it's worth the hassle as I may will have to change again next year.

Will check out the Money Saving Expert link. Thanks.

i joined rac the other day via cashback site, £28 and i got £21 cashback, erm that makes it £7 yep.

then funny enough I had to call them out that day away from my home, dead battery, turned up in just under an hour and sorted it in 5mins job done.
