Pretty much i have dug up an old lappy top of mine which i have been playing around with

firstly i installed windows 7,big mistake could barely run firefoxes.
i then installed Xp and it seems to run pretty smooth but im wanting to get a little more performance out of it so im considering installing 2000

can any 1 reccommend me the best browser for windows 2000,

cheers

As above.

I can't really see you gaining any performance boost using 2000 over XP without the tellytubby UI.

Opera always runs well on the 2000 machines I've used, minimal footprint. IE stopped supporting it years ago so you'd be stuck with IE6 which isn't great.

ok i have changed to classic theme and am now considering not bothering with windows 2000 atall.

could one of you kind gentlemen please point me in the direction of good tweak list for xp, i know all the basics reg, defrag clear space uninstall unwanted but looking for performance enhancements else where if possible i have next to zero services on startup but i think one of the main problems may be avgfree resource hogging

im looking to have the optimum browsing experience, most slimline browser

i have

Pentium M processor 770 & 512 MB DDR2 RAM-

I have a slower laptop (Pentium M 1.7GHz with a gig of RAM running 7 okay with a few bits turned off so I reckon you should get some extra RAM and XP should run quite happily on that! Does it have a spare RAM socket, because if it does I might still have a 512MB stick of DDR2 lying around that you can have for the price of postage :)

I can't remember the list off the top of my head but I'll get googling regarding services you can disable. Also I always go into the advanced options in System (control panel>System) and change it to optimize for performance.

im currently on windows basic dispaly and basic taskbar and optimised for best performance.

thats very kind of you rich i will have a look later when i find out where my screwdrivers have been hidden.

i would ideally like to keep it on windows so other members of the family could use it if need be as many of them are scared of technology

Pentium M processor 770 ,2.13ghz,533mhz fsb 2mb l2 cache
512 MB DDR2 RAM
80gb HDD
thanks for the help guys
i have found a copy of linux lying around so i now have ubuntu 11 installed and it seems to be running pretty smoothly,
only problem i have now is the old trackball mouse is fooked and is running all over the screen, i used to be able to disable it in xp but cant find a way to do it

edit: went in to bios and disabled the internal mouse so now neither trackpad or ball work, but i have a couple of spare mousies so all is good

What are you using the laptop for?

Just surfing? odd document edits?

Have you considered Linux? :D if not then you should....

head over to the Linux subsection and have a look at the the screenshot thread (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17590651)

Start with Ubuntu and install Chromium or Iceweasal

nLite windows xp and you can massively slim down the install. I tried several linux distros and ended up back on XP, as i was more familiar with it, and once i had set up Linux it didn't seem any faster. For what it's worth, I got on best with crunchbang if you want to give it a go.
