Do you need fast OpenVPN and if so what WAN speed? Personally I quite like the PC engines APU2’s, but you would need to add a switch and realistically an AP, also OpenVPN will cap out at 100Mbit per tunnel.
Personally while OpenWRT is useful, if you are going down the route of an APU2 or other x86/64 based build, then you’re likely going to want to consider pfsense/opnsense or Untangle, they bring a lot more to the table in terms of options/features depending on what you need and why. Virtualisation is also an option, but I still prefer my routers bare metal, or at least to have a bare metal failover so that when you update/reboot the host, everything else can still access the internet without disruption.
