Hi guys extremely long term member, but so out of the game it's embarrassing. I haven't build a system myself for about 15 years now, I spent about 3k back then and am thinking of building a new system, but just dip my toe in before I get that addictive feeling of going all out again.

Any suggestions and builds will be fully appreciated and heartfelt thanks going out already to those that take the time to bring me upto speed.

Usage? Gaming, productivity? Both?
Do you need a monitor, keyboard etc too? If you want to keep the monitor, what res?
Will you want to re-use any parts? PSU, case etc? If you have anything you want to then list them so we can see if that's feasible or not.

Just gaming

Go on pc part picker, build an am4 system with the cheapest x3d part, then add the best gpu you can to fit the budget. Post it here and people can suggest how to improve it. It might be that you'll have to downgrade the cpu to non-x3d, etc. Then do the same with an intel base, maybe 12th gen 12400 or better?

Once you have the estimates in place, try and build a cart from your retailer of choice for a complete system and see what it comes to.

I'd start with something like this as the core:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £639.90 (includes delivery: £0.00)

It doesn't leave you much for a case and storage, but you could squeeze it into budget. If there's a bit more room after that, I'd look at improving to 32GB of RAM instead.

It's a real struggle without looking towards pre-used items. If you have a PSU or case to bring forward, I'd upgrade the CPU to a 5700X3D or the GPU to a 7700XT.

Why is the cheapest AM4 board more expensive than the cheapest AM5 board? Shenanigans overclockers. If you're going to force people to go elsewhere for the mobo, what's stopping them from going elsewhere for the parts you're more competitive with? Makes no sense.
