I'm studying A.I (neural nets, genetic algorithms etc), and I want a build which is going to allow me to study those areas the most effectively. Is it just a question of building the fastest machine for the cheapest price?

It can depend on the software you will be using but generally its as many cores as possible on the CPU.

Some software will use GPU's

You would probably be best off with a server boards running a x99 or x79 Chip with as many cores as possiblen Then as much ram as possible (Faster the better) and then you could watercool it overclock the cores.

I wouldn't worry too much about the GPU - any software you use will be CPU heavy, so I'd put your money into that as much as possible for now and then add a GPU when you know whether the software you're using will need it.

Thanks for the replies. So far it seems it's just a question of getting the fastest build possible without worrying about a graphics card.

I'll be coding the A.I myself, but I was wondering if running neural nets/GA's cause a strain on anything in particular, you're basically mimicking parallel computing.

Also what would be a budget approach? and is this problem similar to bitcoin mining?
