I am looking for the absolutely best overclocking C2D mobo to test high end memory in. Anyone got any favourites?

Gigabyte DS3
Asus P5N-E
Asus P5B / P5B Deluxe (my favourite from others' experiences and reviews)
EVGA nForce 680

Asus Striker Extreme - if you're loaded
Asus Commando 965 - if you're loaded

Asus Commando if you are willing to stretch budget, has great layout and features and is using the more mature 965 chipset which is mature and stable. No caps around the CPU socket means it isnt choosy about what cooler you can fit on the CPU and 6 SATA ports is always a bonus.

Don't forget the Abit QuadGT - all the features of the Commando at 2/3rds the price!

yes, but it's max memory performance is limited to ~DDR2 1100 presumably because of the 1067 strap.
P5B Deluxe/Commando I believe it's possible to get to ~ DDR2 1300 (although the overall performance is unlikely to be any better due to the 1333 strap).

But he has a point in that there really is no 'best' board. Even chipsets are hard to distinguish between one and another these days. The 965(P5bdlx/ds3) seem to get high FSB, the 975(P5wdh) get best performance (clock for clock), the 680i get both high FSB and good performance along with overall overclocking performance of both cpu and memory along with SLI capability but also carry the burden of sometimes getting a duff one.

I doubt there are many people realistically agonizing over that last couple of hundred MHz memory performance once you're over 1100 you've pretty much left Kansas anyway.

It's £40 cheaper and for most users (the ones without the £400 RAM) it does as good a job - would you agree?

Pointless post (I don't need to enter a random number to feel cool). It's a perfectly good question as people are spending a lot of money on their stuff and they want to do so wisely.

there's about a dozen posts a week asking this same old question, it does get old and there IS a search feature on the forum for a reason. and yes i find it ironic that you slate my post only to offer no information to the OP yourself.

i know i'm pretty damn cool, but thanks for the reminder anyway :D

to the OP if high FSB is important to you look at 965 boards, but for me a nice FSB 400-450 with tight timings and 1066 strap is the way to go in which case look at 680/650 or 975x boards.

I do but the OP specifically asked about the best board for testing high end memory & regrettably the QuadGT imo doesn't fill that particular spot.

IIRC, the absolute best overall speeds (not clock per clock performance per se but pure speed) are on 965 boards. The top ASUS P5B or Gigabyte DS3 rev 3.3 are doing the best, again IIRC. If testing top end memory is important, no need to pay for bells n whistles such as a Striker or 680i. And, 975 is NOT an option for this specific need.

Wow sparked a little war here with my short post.

I agree on the 975 not being too great as I currently have a Asus PRW-DH Deluxe that I am using which is alright but struggles after 365FSB.

Since I run a review site - can't say which as I have been warned before :) - I can possibly secure a DS3 or QuadGT for free or even possibly a high end MSI board. Out of those choices, what would people recommend?
