Right,

There have been too many near misses recently with idiot drivers, and seeing that hit & run video has pushed me over the edge. There is also a local fool who drives so dangerously there have been emails back and forth to our estates director about him. If we can get footage of him, all the better. What's the best value decent cam for mouting on my dash to record day to day driving?

POV do some but they aren't cheap at all.

Ideally you want one with the option to wipe the last record when powering up if nothing eventful has happened.

My countour HD would do the job nicely as it's very small. It can take larger microSD cards but having to bring them in and wipe them all the time is a pain.

I haven't used it myself, but this seems to have lots of good reviews.

I was going to try it out but couldn't be bothered to sort out a dash-top/windscreen mount for my phone. Nice cheap option if you have a half-decent android phone though.

But would it? 15 min rolling would be better I would think, just in case you have a hit and run a la that video posted today

That video was 6.37 mins long so my guess would have still been good! Maybe you could have an "incident" mode which gets it to carry on reording until full?

I think, having read the products on roadhawks site, the camera used in that video was a Roadhawk. As when the user pushes the 'emergency button' 3 minutes of footage before and after are kept and not written over. Could just be coincidence and luck that he managed to pull her over before the three minutes after the press were up.

I've been using my samsung galaxy s with the "autoboy blackbox" app, using a home made suction mount jobbie. It does the job good, but its a faff setting it all up and taking it all down. Not only that but it absolutely eats the battery life, solution would be putting it on the car charger, which doesnt work as the battery gets too hot, so stops charging...

im definatly going to go for a designated car cam, way too many bad drivers these days....

Loving my ContourHD at the moment.
Slide it onto it's sticky pad dash mount and push record.
You've got to bring it in to charge it up every night and when you open up the software, and import the videos, if nothing happened then you can choose to delete all..
I've inserted a 16GB SD card instead of the standard 2GB so the battery will go flat before it runs out of HDD space and the battery lasts approx 3hrs.
Approximate pricing:
£206 for the ContourHD
£15 for the Memory card.

Todays drive home in a downpour was rather interesting :D
(still processing at time of writing)

After recennty having to settle an insurance claim 50/50 when the other driver (drove straight into me on a roundabout) wont admit liability i also want to make sure i have proof of idiot drivers. I already have a car mount for my phone so i might get that android app

Thanks

I'm still trying to toss up whether to get a ContourHD or Roadhawk DC-1
