i'm building a system for CAD work and i was wondering if there was anything special about any cards which made them better for CAD work? i know there used to be old matrox cards that were supposed to be very good for it, but i dunno if that was one of those 1/2 truths, i dunno. can anyone shed any light on this subject?

nVidia do their Quadro range of cards. They're basically the same as the standard range except with more video ram and much higher prices. The higher prices come from higher design and driver specifications and certification.

quadro fx, firegl, etc good few out that but expensive.

you could do some soft modding and get a workstation gfx card on the proper cheapo.

I just modded my X1900XT-X into a FireGL 7300 \o/
(think it worked - certainly seems to appear as one and performance is better)
