Hey everyone

Just a quick question, I'm not sure about these things.

I just bought this comp earlier this month http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-180-OK

and after it had to go for a repair, Ive got it back and its been great, but with only 1 problem that doesn't relate to the computer exactly, but I bought this new comp for the game Aion, so that I could play it a real nice setting and fps, and it does that perfectly, full settings between 60-120 fps...

but the game is known to have real problems with ATI cards atm, with random crashes, or "Display driver blahblah has stopped responding and successfully. recovered" and just full on green screen computer crashes, Its happening to a lot of people.

The card I have in this new comp is a Asus ATI 4850 1Gb and Ive been having the problems as well. Processor is AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 245 2.90GHz. I want to find out which Is the best Nvidia card I could get that my cpu could handle?

any advice would be great ^_^ thanks

260GTX will do just fine yeah. Dunno much about that mobo but squeezing a few hundred MHz out of the CPU would help as well.

Thanks for both of your replies :) Is that card better or around the same as the 4850?

I would love to know how to overclock my CPU a little, but I wouldn't know where to start lol.

Shot in the dark here... but do you think its at all possible that If I give OC a ring on monday and explain the situation, they might let me exchange the card that came in this one and pay the difference? hehe

Seems a bit of a shame to have such a nice brand new 4850 here that works perfectly fine apart from the new game I bought the computer for lol.

Yeah updated the drivers, even went back to some old one's to see If it sorted out the problem but was no go.

To be fair the card works fine and is in perfect condition, its just a shame Aion is openly admitted to having issues with ATI cards at the moment. I'm sure its something that will be addressed in the future, but I'm kind of impatient :P

This is my first ATI, always had Nvidia before that, so would just feel more comfortable going back to them.

To be fair I put my old GeForce 9600GT 512mb back in for the moment, Is a 260GTX much of an upgrade?

Back again :D

Going to order a GTX 260 and either Ebay or CEX my ATI 4850 to soften the blow :P

Just wondering If I should order the Asus one, or wait until OC have more BFG one's in stock... much of a difference?

your current tower only holds a 400w PSU am I right? Are you sure that will be enough power for your new 260GTX? (PSU Calculators)

The reason I am concerned is that I have pretty much an identical PC set up to you with a 6800GS & 400w PSU, and am putting off upgrading because a 260GTX would require I upgrade my PSU.

I'm sure it would run fine, but surely there is a risk it could blow the PC.

Can anyone else clarify this PSU will be sufficient?

If this isnt an issue, I'm almost definately gonna get a new graphics card. RIGHT. NOW!

Thats a good point - 260GTX could potentially use upto 60watt more at load - tho it uses much less idle - than the 4850.

Oh, does that mean I cant get the 260 then? =/

I really cant afford a new PSU aswell right now, any way to check If it would be ok?

I ran 'PSU Calculators' and it shows drain over 400w. (Google them, and play around with them yourself)

I know how you feel though, I'm in exactly the same situation as you, a PSU upgrade means the cost of upgrading is pretty high :(

Thinking im gonna wait til christmas

400 watt is too close to call... the corsair is a relatively good brand so might manage it... or it might not. I was assuming a system like that would come with atleast a 500watt PSU :S

PSU calc's are rubbish, they always over estimate the wattage by a large amount. I am looking at anandtech's review of the 260gtx and it's paired with 3.2ghz intel quadcore and the system uses 280watts under load.

Bah, turning out to be rather expensive...

It says on the specifications on the OC link that its 400w, Just opened it and had a look, says the same corsair brand just 450w on the casing of the PSU, so I'm not sure.

Either way could anyone recommend a decent PSU for purchasing in the near future? someone told me to never buy a cheap PSU, but I'm not sure what is considered "cheap" lol

450 should be upto the job... I ran a Q6600 + 2x 260GTX in SLI with a load of fans and 4 HDDs fine off a 600 watt PSU... tho I have now upgraded to a 700watt "just to be sure" - plus the PSU runs cooler and quieter that way.

If you have a corsair 450w then there is no need to upgrade. Your current system is probably using no more than 230watts, and with a 260gtx you will probably be using no more than 270-280watts.

However if you want to upgrade then Corsair, Seasonic, Enermax, OCZ, PC P&C, Be Quiet! all make top quality PSU's.
