Bought one last week to replace my GTX280 on a budget and it's a good performer.
Having owned a 4850, 4870 (512mb), 3x GTX260 and 1x GTX280, I would vote for the 260. At stock speeds it is close to the 4870 in terms of performance and price, but when overclocked it easily overtakes the 4870 (overclocked) and more than matches a stock GTX280.
For £100 get the 4850 (great card and easy ATI win).
For £160 get the 260 (NVidia win if you overclock).
I found that the 260 also provides smoother frame rates with less "trough's" than my 4870 (admittedly a 512mb version). The 4870 was not really any better than my 4850 which overclocked massively.
Which was the quieter card, 260 or the 4870?
