Hi,

I am about to build my first system although I have been upgrading and maintaining all my systems over the years, this will be the first I have ever built from scratch.

I am a first year (mature) multimedia student at university and I will be using this system mainly for 2d/video/3d rendering work so I know I will need the following.

3 x Sata HDD (2 of them in a raid 0 and one for storage)
1 x graphics card (no need for SLI or crossfire). I currently have a FX5900XT which seems up to my current tasks.
1 x pci sound card with breakout box
1 X DVD drive
1 X DVD-rw drive
A Firewire port at the front of the case would be useful but not a must.

I am thinking along the lines of a AMD X2 to drive this system.

I would like my system to be fairly quite. I have looked at a few cases and I am open to suggestions. My current considerations are

  • Antec Sonata II
  • Eclipse 62
  • Silverstone Temjin TJ05
  • Lian Li V1000B (although this takes me slightly over budget)

I like the Sonata because of it's price and it comes with a 450W power supply. The Lian Li is obviously a good looking case and I also like the Eclipse because I have heard it is a nice case to work with.

Any recommendations?

Well good taste in cases firstly, all are A+ cases.

The sonata is the out of the box quietest solution.
The Eclipse is a good cooling solution, but the plastic front can be a put off.
The Silverstone is a Silverstone; good quality case but overpriced, but a good solid case.
The Lian Li is a great case, expensive but the best quality available on the market today.

The Sonata 2 seems to be the case most suited to you, and if you like it, why not!

Although I will take this time to add to the mix the PC7+ Lian Li. It is a cracking little case, built to last but it is just the case with no gimicky features. Literally all the money has gone into making it high quality.

Check the sticky and also my site www.yewen.co.uk as I have a few user reviews of some of the cases up on it currently.

didnt know you had a website for cases yewan looks good and helps :) i think al be askin for case advice from you
back to the cases in hand in my opinion i would go lian-li been told there fantastic my mate has one he said its the best case he has ever had. in the end depends on what you want and if the style suits you but i would go for what ever feels right for you. i have been looking at cheiftec dragons cases because i think they look top notch people say they are only thing i dont like about it is itsa steel case Ie - heavy which not looking forward to but am its your choice in the end.

INFECTION cheers, it is not finnished yet but I am just building it up slowly; hoping to have it as part of the sticky on here soon - like what Baddass did in the Monitors bit with TFT central (I shamelessly copied his idea)

Lian Li's cases are built like tanks, but the chieftec cases are tanks!

INFECTION if you add me to msn I could give you a walkthrough on a dragon/scorpio if you like.

chieftecs weigh the same amount as tanks aswell! i had one for a while, but i couldnt carry it around anywhere or move it without the help of a forklift near enough!

i'm planning on getting the Li-Li PC7+ with the 120mm out, its really cheap for a li-li, and still maintains the top notch quality.

I am thinking Lian Li. I like the minimalist look and it will look nice next to my Apple Powerbook :)

What is the difference between the PC7+ and the PC60? I still like the idea of a V1000 because they do look so nice but I want to explore all my options first.

The pc7+ is the better value between the two currently.

Although if you like the idea of a v1000+ then you wont regret it ;)

Best case out there at the moment in my opinion.

Well you might be better of asking in General Hardware:

But the Tagan 580w easycon is a nice PSU, the Hipers are popular and Antec and Enermax always make nice PSU's.

Well I have my new case (PC7+) and PSU (FSP 500W Blue Storm) ... I just need to start to get the other bits together. I just wanted to say that I am amazed at the price I paid for this Lian Li. Such a fantastic case!!!

Another happy Lian Li PC7 owner :)

Better than what you were expecting then eh?

You wait until the case has settled in, you will still think the case as great in a year. I would put money on it.
