Best case for a 5090?

Hey guys,

So I've got a 5090 inside a Corsair 5000D Airflow, I've got 3x fans in the top blowing air into the case, I've got an AIO 2x140mm radiator for my CPU (i9-13900KS) and a single fan on the back.

I do a lot of stable diffusion + comfy workflow stuff generating video, and also playing games - and the case gets so hot it's unreal the GPU hits 85, but the entire case gets red hot.

I tried swapping the airflow of the fans around (they're all on full) not much joy.

How are you guys keeping your rigs cool? or are you simply just accepting that this stuff runs so hot?

What sort of temperatures are we talking about here on the CPU and GPU while under light use and actual heavy load and in which exact situations? A game load is going to differ from workloads or AI rendering for example. What are your ambient temps to boot, and is this a new problem given the weather is quite warm at the moment?

You're running two components which can get extremely hot under certain loads, and are presumably pushing them with your workload. The 5000D airflow is not a bad case for temps by any measure.

The exact AiO, fans etc would help too but I have a feeling you're just getting hammered by the nature of the hardware.

The first obvious issue would be fans at the top blowing air into the case, heat rises and that would be counter productive. Can you post a picture of the inside of your case and indicate what fans are blowing where exactly?

With the 5000D you more or less want to be doing this in terms of fan airflow (the bottom red arrow indicates the PSU, it should be drawing air out of the case):

So i've got 4x "be quiet! Silent Wings PRO 4 120mm" fans, and the AIO is this: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/arct...ormance-cpu-water-cooler-240mm-hs-07b-ar.html

Ambient temp on the GPU is around 45, ambient on the CPU package is 41.

It is warm in here - this is a new problem but it started when my 5090 turned up about 2 weeks ago, since then it's just been getting so hot.

Maybe I just need to accept it lol

Edited the above post a little.

I'd also look into undervolting your 5090, they tend to respond well to it and otherwise use a bucketload of power which translates into heat.

It’s a 600 watt card which IMO is well beyond air cooling in an ATX format. My buddy has had a pretty torrid time with his build.

Ultimately an open frame is the way to go, but after a couple of case swaps he ended up trying a Havn case and bunch of high performance fans with positive pressure. This is somewhere between an open frame and traditional case. I will add he did also end up adding a 900 watt window AC to the room to deal with the heat. This may be a better solution if the heat from the card is saturating the room.

Yeah that's what I'm kind of thinking.. it throws out so much heat it's unreal - without having those old fashioned delta fans running at 9krpm, I don't see a solution to this.

I might be tempted to buy one of those big external radiator towers and put a block on the GPU, but not sure I can be arsed as it's a nightmare trying to sell later down the line..

Think I might just roll with the side of my case off...

I was chatting with my pal again today, and he’s now discovered after about 4 hours running a heavy workload, the heat from the RTX 5090 causes the PSU to shut the system down. So 3 cases, a dozen fans, 2 PSUs and 1 air conditioner later the 5090 is usable. He’s just waiting for Seasonic to release the PSU with a solution for the burning 12vHP issue…

That's utterly ridiculous, you should be able to maintain performance with a 15-20% undervolt which would help a fair bit, assuming he hasn't already done so.

It is ridiculous, especially considering the price of the card. I’m not sure by how much, but he did limit the power draw. I seem to remember him saying he only lost a little performance.
