Best/Cheapest Vent/Mumble server?

Trying to do that now with the ACL (?) editor thing by adding an Admin group but i've no idea what i'm doing to be fair, layout seems rather messy and everything seems like a hassle to do. Might be because i've been using Vent for the last 4 or so years.

Cheers Oxy, managed to sort it now. What are the best audio settings to use? I'm guessing the high bandwidth one but it only says that it's suitable for LAN parties and so on.

Don't set it so high, remember that upload will be less that 100kb/s.

Mine's on default and sounds fine, but then again it's only for me and my mate to have quick chats

Just a quick bump for anyone wandering about Mumble.

Been using it for about 5 or so hours and the sound quality is excellent. On par with Vent and there's no lagg whatsoever. A bit difficult for me at 1st to set up, but once you know the ropes it's fine. Amazing set of tools on it too regarding settings and editing users, anyone curious about this give it a go, i'd say it's better than Vent and i've been using Vent for the last 4 or so years.

Preaching to the converted.

Have had a 10 slot Mumble server with Multiplay for over 18 months now and LOVE it.

Much better sound quality and less lag than Vent/TS in my opinion.

I strongly urge anyone admining a Mumble server to look up Access Tokens and use them to their full potential.

lag in vent? what? never anything but smooth and clear for me.

There's a known issue with Vent where people will be silent for minutes at a time and then all of a sudden, everything they've been saying comes through at once.

It's annoying and I've had it happen quite a few times now, Mumble has better sound quality anyway and lower latency in general, it's a much nicer app.

Mumble also has an awesome equlisation thing, so people with quiet mics sound as loud as the people with good ones. People were struggling to hear me with vent, but I'm as loud as anyone else now with mumble.

That's generally caused by an issue with latency on the client end I thought?

As for sound quality, I've got to disagree. :) It's all dependent on the codecs you use, and I've yet to hear a mumble server sound better than a well set up vent server. It might be capable of it, but I've not heard it yet. :)

Surely people don't intentionally use "bad" codecs?

Both TS and Vent are capable of better, but most of the time, Mumble beats them.

Maybe I've just been spoilt by using a vent servers good codecs on, but it still nags at me whenever I'm on a mumble server. :)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's bad software by any means, I just prefer vent personally. :p

Both can be fixed on Vent, by enabling normalizer! ;)

Vent sounds 100 times better than mumble, and I just can't seem to find a decent guide setting up mumble.

Ventrilo is 10 times better than Mumble. It's higher quality, easier to configure, better supported, easier to use...

I have had that happen to me for a few seconds at a time, but not for entire minutes. It is annoying if you are doing something important, but I'm sure there is a way around it.

There is no way Vent is "10" or "100" times better. The difference in voice quality is minimal when set-up correctly.

The reason I switched was because of the speaking delay.
