Hi,

I have an OC system with an overclocked Q6600, 650w power, 2X2GB DDR2, Abit IP35 XE Intel P35 (socket 775) Mobo, Antec 900 case.

Current card is a 9800 GT (512MB)

I realsie the MOBO is very old. Whats the best upgrade card for around or under £100 that will work with the system and improve performance.

Will the ancient Mobo be a bottleneck and reduce performance with much of an upgrade?

Hi there,

May I ask what make and model number 650W PSU you are using?

As for running a modern graphics card - your IP35 only has a x16 PCI-E v1.1 graphics card slot (modern ones are V2.0 or 2.1 and have double the bandwidth). However, for any graphics card you can get hold of for ~£100 this really won't hold you back much (a few% FPS at the most).

As for which card to go for (assuming your PSU is up to it) - I would go for this one, or this one if you really need it to be under £100 (that said the ASUS card is a better deal since it comes with a nice custom cooler and a 3 year warranty - the OEM card just has the stock cooler and 1 year warranty).

Hi,

The PSU is a Corsair TX 650 ATX 2.2 SLi Compliant the cooling is Arctic cooling Freezer pro. The CPU is clocked to 3.2. Having read the similar thread a few below this one, 'looking to replace my 8800gtx' sorry missed that, are the replies differnet for my situation.

Ah, nice PSU - you should be able to handle pretty much any single-GPU card currently available.

The other thread does seem to a be pretty similar (Q6600, existing graphics card is basically the same speed) though his budget appears to be a bit higher "in the £100-£200 range, ideally closer to £100" as opposed to "around or under £100" in your case.

For this reason you will see suggestions for £135 cards like the excellent HD 6870 or £150 cards like the OEM GTX 470. These are all great cards and if you can stretch the budget a bit then they are worth going for - however if you want to stick closer to £100 then the two GTX 460 1GB cards I mentioned above are tough to beat. Another card to look out for is a new HD 5850 for £120 or less, these are technically EOL cards but they are often priced very well and pack a mean punch.

P35 is a decent chipset and you've got a good overclock on the Q6600 so i'd say any later gen card would compliment your system, if £100 is max budget then a GTX460 would probably be the one to go for.

Ock'ers currently have Nvidia refurb deals on with full years warranty.

or if you don't like the idea of a refurb.
