Did a first build yesterday and found that the stock cooler on the conroe chip is way too noisy for my liking and am looking to replace it.

Any suggestions as to what would be best?
I've been looking at the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7, the Zalman 9500 and the Scythe Ninja Plus.

what would be best?

Value for cash: Freezer
Performance: Ninja
Looks Cool: Zalman

I don't know a lot about the noise these things make, but I would think the ninja will be quiter for same performance as it uses a bigger fan than the other two.

I've got a Freezer Pro running on a DS4 and e6400 @3.4Ghz.

Temps are just under 60 degrees C - That's under full load, with dual prime running for around 2 hours.

The other great points of the Freezer, is that it's cheap and easy to fit.

All scythe Ninjas now come with a fairly decent fan and are branded Ninja plus. Unless you want silence the supplied fan is fine for fairly low noise.

In order of performance:
-Scythe Infinity (unreleased, pretty certain it will be the best)
-Thermalright Ultra 120 (depends on the fan fitted, beats the ninja with the same fan)
-Tuniq Tower (may beat Ultra 120 depending on the fan, but poor availability and the supplied fan isn't quiet)
-Scythe Ninja

I have been looking for quietness as the main issue since im nto overclocking at the moment (may in the future)
I gave my computer to a palce for fixing a couple of problems though and am getting them to change thef an as well. Unfortunately they don't have the arctic cooling in stock, and will get it "some time next week" and they don't keep the ninja plus. I'm in a kind of a hurry to get this comp back, so i've decided to go with the Zalman 9500 since they do have that. I'm not sure how noisy it'l be, but I might pick up the computer tomorrow and i'l liten to it then. I've got 2 7950 GX2's as well in the rig, so if I can't hear the Zalman over them, it should be ok. I read somewhere that the 7950's operate at about 40dbs. Since the Zalmans under full load are 27.5 (not sure about this) and 18 at low RPM, I think it should be ok.

My dad got fed up with me over-analyzing and over-thinking things, so he's told me to go and get the zalman fitted, and if i'm too unhappy with it, then get the arctic cooling. I'm not too happy with that solution since it involves wasting some money, but yea, my dad's gotten pretty fed up :p

At any rate, thanks for the help everyone :) And if someone has some re-assuring things to say about the Zalman, that would be nice ^_^

If you can afford to waste your money on two GX2s then what's a few tenners for a HSF?

Zalman HSFs are very quiet.

Email them and ask if you can prepay for the order, thats what i had to do to get one,it only took 2 weeks for me to get it :)

Seems that "mid September" is a date for stock to arrive anywhere.

What about a Thermaltake Big Typhoon? Seen some good reviews.

the only review anyone should ever wright about a thermaltake product is an assesment of impact damage from my foot kicking said product.

The Big Typhoon is actually pretty good. Better than the Freezer 7 IMO.
