Hi there about to purchase a core I5 750and just wanted some recommendations on which afternarket cooler is best, intend to overclock it and play games but dont want to pay silly money for a cooler.

thanks in advance tony

As far as premium coolers go, your options are fairly limited at the moment. The usual favourites seem to be dragging their heels on the socket 1156 mountings.

I went with the corsair H50 myself.

There's a new Noctua due out shortly which is getting some attention round these parts...I believe it's called NH D14 or something like that.

The prolimatech megahalems is very popular, but the version stocked on OCUK doesn't have 1156 fittings - they do have the Mega Shadow version which has 1156 fittings, but is quite expensive.

The other thing to be aware of is that many people have problems with big heatsinks obstructing the RAM slots on socket 1156 boards. This should only be a problem if your RAM is tall, but worth bearing in mind. My RAM has little heatsinks on top, so that's why I played it safe with the H50, as that has no such problems.

Hi thanks a lot for your reply, Ive got the silverstone raven 2 so i cant use the h50 as the case only has one exhaust fan and if i use that for the h50 the case wont beable to exhaust the hot air. Ive just got 8gb of the ocz obsidian ram which dont have any heat sinks to get in the way of the cpu cooler.

i looked at the megalems but there very exspensive and you have to buy fans aswell. Might stick with the stock cooler when i get it for the time being if there are many reasonable prices cooler out there at the mo.

I've just purchased a Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme Rev. C and it's much better than the cooler I had before, especially when connected to a fan controller. It can be run virtually silently, and temps are quite good. Fits in my mATX case no problems.

Nice case - almost got one of those myself. You can run the H50 in it. Check this review.

Looks like they used it in exhaust mode...many people seem to be doing this and reporting that it makes little difference.

The stock cooler should be fine if you can hold off overclocking for now, but as I'm sure you're aware, it's not a good idea to overclock on stock cooling. I also suspect the stock cooler might be noisy, but I cannot confirm this as I've not used one myself.

I would imagine there'll be some more options for 1156 in the not too distant future. I might even be tempted with the new Noctua myself.
