Hey Guys..

I've had my rig under the floorboards since 2002 and although it's had a few upgrades I think now is the time for a Quad upgrade.

http://www.fortunecity.co.uk/skyscraper/byte/30/pcunderground.htm

I'm thinking of a Q6600 GO but I'm not sure what heatsink would make most of my custom setup (Basicly the Ambient temp of the PC is 4-10C lower than normal room temp.

For example is it currently 20.1 C in my room and 16.1 C under the floor.

Obviously with the winter on the way proper I have a good opportunity to OC more!

I'm thinking of the usual suspect Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme with 120mm fan and lapping it of course.

But if there are any better alternatives that may work better with a lower ambient temp I would be interested - especially if cheaper ;-)

I'm guessing the bigger the size of the heatsink the better it will react to the ambient temp so maybe the Ultra 120 is a good choice (Or anyone know of a Bigger heatsink ;-)?

The Ultra 120, as you mention suspect~if the base is uneven then will require lapping. An excellent cooler pneumonic had 4Ghz o/c with both a lapped 120, and Q6600.

Yeah sorry , just an angled shot to give some depth/perspective to the photo's also under the floor is my Sky+ box and Wifi router.. I could fit a whole server farm down there if I had one ;-)

the IFX-14 performes slightly worse than the Ultra-120 extreme in all the reviews I have seen.. although I cant say that I have tried one..

In gerneral the Heatsink is only 50% of the story for air temps, the RPM of the fan on the cooler and the fans you have on the case to recycle air are just as important... the faster you can get air from the outside of the case over your heatsink fins and out the back the better :)

Ive just lapped my Tunic + 4300, will post results tomorrow when i install Windows etc etc.

Not sure if the Tunic needed lapping but no harm i suppose.

If your pc is below the floor then whynot stick a delta on a thermalright-ultra.

And just crank up the fan speed for those overclocks ;)

Fair enough on the IX-14 - ive got a true anyway so im happy :)
What about those backplate coolers tho, any reports on them?

What a fantastic fire hazard.

Bring it above ground, dont think your insurance company would like that if the house catche fire.
