I already have an HNC in Graphic Communication and would like to complete a course to give me the knowledge and technical skills to design website backends i.e. database driven using SQL. What would your advice be? I know I could teach myself however I would like some formal training to give me a headstart.

I can't offer any advice on which course to take as I taught myself, however I can tell you what you're after is Web Developer courses, not Web Designer.

Web designers usually work in photoshop, flash, etc. and are responsible for creating the UI and look and feel of the website.
Web devlopers are the guys who work in code like ASP/PHP and connect the websites to databases and do all the things that make the site function.

Just get stuck in, don't bother with a course unless you find you are better off learning that way. Personally I am not, reading a book, watching video tutorials, asking for help in forums etc I find to be a much better way of learning. Set out a small project for your self and get going.

ASP.NET / PHP / ASP etc doesnt really matter what you do it in.

I have experiance in ASP, PHP, ASP.NET c#, SQL, mySQL and I find .net to be my fav framework.

Also all the people who are fresh out uni with Computer science or similar degrees have the knowledge of programming which is dated rather than fresh.
