I'm currently using a Akasa AK-975CU CPU Cooler to keep my Pentium D 915 coolish but i've maxed out at 3.7ghz because I can't keep it cool enough. I had a real hassle fixing my motherboard to the case and I can't really afford to go for water cooling.

What the best air cooler for LGA775 which wont need a back plate to fix it on with?

Why don't you want a backplate?

Both Tuniq Tower and Thermalright Ultra need backplates...the Scythe Ninja is probably your best bet :)

I bought a cheap case and all the threads on the spacer striped when i put the board in... Gutted! and it makes it a real mission to remove my board. Need a new case really...

You must have used the wrong screws to do that to all of them? Try replacing 1 of the screws with the correct and see if it'll grip.
