wife has an acer aspire 5750z laptop that im thinking of upgrading while i can (got a little one on the way in the summer)
at the moment its got a Intel Pentium B950 2.1 GHz
from what i gather i need a CPU with socket G2 (rPGA988B)
this shows the available CPU's

anyone got any suggestions as to what would really show the difference and is it worth it?
laptops not really used for games but can be used for web design and photoshop etc
ideally would like to not spend more than £150-£200 max!
or do i just leave it as it is and get her something else down the line

Er what do you want to achieve from this. The B950 is actually a pretty good performer.

Heck you can do most things on cpus with a fraction of the power of yours quite happily including design, graphics, cad etc.

My i3 380m only scores a bit higher and that handles everything.

If you were gaming there could be value in it but since that isn't a gaming laptop you won't be so its a moot point.

You will see a bigger speed boost per £ from a fresh install, possibly a 7200rpm drive (rather than the costs of an SSD) and a decent amount of memory say 8GB assuming you have the 4GB version of your laptop. 4GB of DDR3 Kingston is £17 at the moment.

Otherwise, you could see £200-£250 for your laptop on Gumtree. I sold a 2 year old lenovo G555 with an AMD M320 (slow compared to yours) for £180 within 1 hour of listing it. Put another 200 to that and you could get some really nice i3/i5 laptops + the benefit of a new warranty etc.

For Example £450 gets you

Acer Aspire 5750G Part Number: LX.RAZ02.136

Stock Code: 6221296

2316G64Mnkk, Intel® Core™ i3-2310M Dual Core Processor, 15.6" HD Screen, Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit, 6GB RAM, 640GB HDD, DVD Rewriter, Dedicated GT 540M Graphics,

i think maybe the idea of 8gb ram will do for its life thinking about it
i just didnt know whether to upgrade the cpu now to give the laptop many more years life - whereas i dont know what will change over the next year if that makes sense and i know that with our little one coming along i wont have that sort of cash for a cpu upgrade
thanks for the reply

Until the CPU prices get down to the £20-£40 mark it really won’t be worth it for yours. The memory and a fresh reinstall will work wonders. Did you do a fresh windows install when you got it, as acer do like to include some software that makes their machines plod? Also what Anti-Virus are you using, Norton or McAffee (the standard acer oem ones iirc) can be resource hogs.

yeah i did a fresh install as soon as it was on as i expected loads of bloatware
installed kaspersky as get that from barclays (unless you can recommend something less resourceful?)
thanks again

Sounds fine then, were you actually experiencing slowness hence the desire to upgrade or just curious?

The mem upgrade will do you just fine. Have you got 1x4gb or 2x2gb in there?

just curious - also looking to make things better lol
i got 1x4gb according to the crucial memory tool and cpu-z so i will get another 4gb stick and all will be fine!

thank again for your help
