Simple question for chaps around these parts. I have a 680i I bought at launch along with a E6600 that is running at 3.6Ghz under water.

What would a good new cpu be? Also would I really see much of a difference? Mostly for games, I don't do any encoding.

Thanks denizens of ocuk!

I would imagine you could probably push a Wolfdale. As lunarwolf said most bios's have been amended to at least let you run one. OC'ing is a different cattle of fish though.

What board do you have. ?? That way we could determine what your best options are. ??

I am using a 680i with the evga bios... it is not a evga but one of the original nvidia reference boards (so they were all the same).

I have a 680i and 8400, but the E6600 is probably still the best bet atm.

Games tend to get more and more GPU dependant, so I'd probably just keep the E6600. Better to wait for when you're ready to switch to a whole new platform.

I sure most 'launch' 680i mobos do not cater for 45nm cpu's, however some will with a bios update.
one example of not being able to run a 45nm is the v1.0 EVGA 680i mobo (not even with a bios update), the second revision of this mobo does run the 45nm cpu.

I have a Asus Striker extreme 680i (also had a Abit IN9) with an E8500 with no probs, runs @ 3.8 all day long and can bench @ 4+ Ghz, but as far as an upgrade goes, i dont think you will be getting much performace gain between the 6600 and a 8500... 5 maybe 10%.

So i think your next upgrade path should be i7 ;)
