any help please. I want to build/have built for me a PC with a mid range graphics card, but with a view to upgrading to one of the latest high end cards next summer. So I want a system that when it comes to the GPU upgrade in 6-9 months will not be a bottleneck. what cpu/mb should I be aiming for? Another build related question. Is their a 'rule of thumb' figure, as maybe a %, as to how much more you pay for a 'paid for' custom build vs doing it yourself?

Building a system yourself is always cheaper like for like components , having it built for you saves the hassle has a warranty but comes at a cost.

Budget is always the limiting factor so getting the most for it is the key.

Gaming can be demanding so as you go for higher resolution then a more capable graphics card is required.

What's your budget And what resoloution refresh rate you want yo game at ?

thanks for replying. budget is about £1500 excluding a new monitor. I would like an upgrade path to 4k gaming, but would be happy to play the latest titles somewhat less than that to begin with.I haven't even began to look refresh rates. I've got an old but still very good Dell monitor which I'd keep until better monitors become a bit more affordable. I've got my eye on the new ryzens and the new radeon gpu

Here is a baseline you should be aimng at the 5600x or 5800x but availability is an issue. You may have to go ryzen 3000 if you cant wait. There is intel option which is still. You could go intel even though there slightly overtaken by the new Amd cpu but you can at least get them.

You you could add a 1650 £160 superor or a 1660 super £220 both will do 1080p but the 1660 is far better and will allow some 1440p gaming.

Windows 10 keys can be had for £10 .

Your options
wait for 5000 cpu or get a 3000 now
Intel build.

CODE My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £613.80 (includes shipping: £15.90)

great thanks for this. I think I'll be waiting for the 5000's to become available more widely. is there much difference between the radeon 6800xt and the 3070/3080 and would this mb take the 5000 cpu and any of these graphics cards?

The motherboard above will take the 5000 cpu any b550 or x570 motherboard will do that too. The tomahawk is one of the best value boards.

6800xt is equivalent to a 3080 it just whatever you can get first and they will work with the above boards
