Hi.
Right now I am mid build on a new gaming rig that I would like to last 5 years(ish), I have a 2011 board but with the drop of 1151 I am now in limbo on what cpu I should be buying this weekend when I get paid.

What should I be getting with the long term in mind

5820k is more future proof with 6 cores.

DX12 can use drawcalls from 6 cores, and with the minimal improvements to Skylake, its a no brainer if you're upgrading now.

I'd say a hex core wouldn't be a bad idea. Whilst I wouldn't go for x99 personally as I have a very capable 4930k, if upgrading from Sandybridge quad cores or older, you can't really go wrong with a 5820k.

You didn't set a budget which is dangerous !

The 'Best' CPU according to passmark is the Intel Xeon E5-2699 v3 @ 2.30GHz
With 18 cores (!) it scores 22892

The nearest i7 is the 5960X which scores 16,028 It is of course much better than the 5820K which 'only' scores 12,970

Interestingly the i7-4960X scores 13956 beating the 5820K as well.

Because the 5820k is basically the same CPU as the 4960X but downclocked and costs like 1/3rd of the price.

Bang for buck is easy. The extra cost for those CPU aren't worth it unless you're doing some scientific calculations or something extremely high demanding.

Ah 'worth'!
Trouble is as I said at the beginning, he didn't ask for best value or best bang for buck, just 'the best' !

To be honest future proofing is a lot more than the CPU, which is probably one of the least important.

What ever you do for, make sure you get plenty of RAM because it's amazing how quickly programs need it.
And a motherboard which has plenty of expansion, so you can buy an expansion card when USB4 comes along!

Doesn't matter about storage as it's cheap enough and easy to replace. A Good PSU should be transferrable from an old build to a new one, buy a big one.

Graphics cards are almost a disposable item with new & better ones coming along every couple of years if not faster, and DX compatibility often an issue.
