Hi all,

Have a 775 mobo that im more than happy with. at the moment i have a Core 2 Duo E8200 (2.66GHz,1333FSB,L2:6MB,rev.C0)

And im wanting to upgrade - i will probably stay on the 775 Arch.

Would you look for something like :

Core 2 Duo E8600 (3.33GHz,1333FSB,L2:6MB,65W,rev.E0)
Or A
Core 2 Quad Q6700 (2.66GHz,1066FSB,L2:2X4MB,rev.G0,4 cores)

Im mainly going to be playing games on this Box, so what do you think?

Am i right in assuming that not many games will support quad CPU? so Dual core is be better choice (the Dual Core supports a faster FSB too.)

Agree, depending on if your ram and mobo are capable, you will get some good gains from overclocking.

See where that leaves you before buying another chip.

Before buying a quad, do some research on your motherboard. There's a few people on here that made the same upgrade and found that their motherboard was no good for overclocking quads.

The Q8400 is £122
The Q9400 is £165

The only difference is 2Mb more of L2 cache. I have a Q8400. I was going to get the Q9400 late last year, but the price difference for 2Mb of cache was £20 at the time so I went with the Q8400

is the strongest quad core for that socket.

Afaik nowadays most games do support quad cores. its taken ages for games to start using them, but even games like Counter strike Source have gotten quad core updates. I think its GTA4 which really uses quad cores also ( not 100% sure though)

also what are realistic prices for you?

You mean the strongest quad you can buy on overclockers, a Q9550 beats that.

Intel® Core™2 Extreme Processor QX9770
(12M Cache, 3.20 GHz, 1600 MHz FSB) is the strongest LGA775

Q9550 is the best choice for "newest quads", the rest are just cache gimped chips, exception being the q9650, but that costs a lot more. Even a q6600 would be a better choice, providing you can find a proven clocker, and if you have the motherboard to get the best out of it.

Only upgrade worth it would be a quad core imo.
Don't jump to a E8400 / E8600 or some other dual..... then you are better off overclocking your current cpu..
