Hi.

Just about to dismantle and rebuild my PC and as I have not used it for a while what's the best thermal stuff to put between my 4970K and H100i..

Last time I had to buy some it think I used Artic silver 5 but that was a few years back.

There is nothing wrong with AS5, it is still a potent brand. Recently I have been using Gelid EC extreme which came with my water blocks.

AS5 usually falls in the middle of the pack for performance so it's OK to use but there are some much better performers out there if you are going to be OCing and need the extra few degrees cooling.

Stulid did a great round up Thermal Paste Round Up

To cut to the chase from the round up

Thermal paste round-up.

If I was buying thermal paste tomorrow with my own money, the Gelid Solutions GC-Extreme or MX-2 would be first on my shopping list with the Prolimatech PK-1 Nano and Alpenföhn "Snow Cannon" following close behind.

Arctic Silver apparently takes time to settle in, I'd just get whichever offers the best value the margins are going to be so small anyway.

IMO reviews that say x paste is 1C better than x paste are never going to be 100% accurate due to ambient temperature variations, differences in the application etc.

I remember when everyone raved about AS5 as the best thing ever, they were also raving about the amd xp3200 at the same time to be fair.

The main benefit of Mx-4 is that it's non conductive whilst still being exceptional cooling, which is nice for novice tinkerers since you can't really balls it up

I remember fondly using AS5 cos it had FRIEAAAKEN SILVER IN IT!!!

Moved onto MX3 and if needed any now would get MX4.

AS5 is mildly capacitive which some people theorised could cause issues on GPU RAM chips (or was that VRMs?) and of course it conducts so it was thought a bit riskier using it on GPU waterblocks etc
