Best CPU to replace Ryzen 3600

BIOS is always Up to date. And yeah nothing stress full CPU wise and GPU my RX5700 Nitro+ has most things covered at 1080p to a level I'm happy with.

I just want to get the best out of what I've got without much more of a spend.

What exactly do you use your PC for? Depending on use case the answers can differ pretty wildly.

If gaming the 5700X3D is your best bet if you don't want to go to the trouble/expense of AM5.

Regardless, if it hardly gets used why do you want to upgrade?
Games mostly, I want it available for my kids to start playing things like Fortnite and the like in the very near future.

A 3600 and RX5700 match up pretty well tbh and should be fine for Fortnite, I'm not sure that I'd bother unless you're planning on a GPU upgrade too.

That aside, as others have mentioned the X3D chips are your best bet. The 5700X3D can be had for around £180-200 currently, the 5800X3D is a little faster (around 5-10% on average) but not enough to warrant the price hike assuming you can find one in stock. You'd be better off jumping ship to AM5 if you're at the point where you're spending £300 + on a CPU.

Thanks, I think it's more the rational I need to get straight in my head, I was looking to put the 3600 in my Unraid box as that will mean a new motherboard too.

Uniraid for home use/nas shouldn't really take all that much processing power, a cheap second hand motherboard and cpu would be enough I'd assume.

You can get AM4 motherboard/Ryzen 1600 type bundles for £50-60 if you go second hand, if you have MM access you could pop in a request. You might even nail a 5700X3D on the cheap with some luck, there's been a couple of cracking deals on there lately.

My Unraid rig has 20+ containers and serves 120tb of storage, it's rolled for my whole family not just the home. The i5 6500 I built it on is feeling the strain of concurrent Minecraft and Rust servers currently.

Noted.

That's a bit higher end than I usually see from people running a home NAS setup, still I'd hit up the MM and see how you do.

If you're planning to use the 3600 as a server then definitely getting another AM4 platform to replace it (5700x3d) is the wrong choice.

This.

It's probably about the budget. Change to AM5 requires a different mono+ram+CPU whereas staying in AM4 only requires the CPU.
yes but not quite for OP's scenario. OP is basically requiring a whole new set of core components:

I was looking to put the 3600 in my Unraid box as that will mean a new motherboard too.

If your not running the latest version of Windows 11 then your missing out on extra performance, combine that with a X3D chip and your looking at around 30%+ extra performance.

As others have already mentioned I'd question if it's worth upgrading given the use case.

I'm in a similar boat myself (Ryzen 1600) but I've used my desktop twice in the last year I think so it's merely an upgrade itch rather than a need. I use my laptop these days which is plenty for what I use it for.
