I'm not sure if I should be posting this here with it being about TVs but I assume gamers will have the best knowledge. I think you folks would agree 8bit and 16bit games look best on a CRT TVs. Is any company still making new CRT TV's? Can anyone spec me one that will make my old games look their best.

Plasmas do scaling very well, they don't look bad at all.

Unless you've got oodles of space and want to pay silly money for a HD crt, I'd go plasma. Projectors look good for retro too.

My SNES and Sega Saturn look great on my dads plasma compared to any LCD I've tried it on (Samsung, LG and Sony).

Even when using those RGB scart cables PS2/Gamecube look pretty dire on the LCDs I tried them on.

I suppose you could try an old CRT 4:3 monitor but you'd have limited input options (unless buying an expensive switcher box), with most plasmas you have around 3 RGB slots and standard aerial. Not sure what kinda consoles you intend to connect though.

I play my PS2 and Xbox through component on a 32" LCD I also run SNES, Megadrive etc. upscaled through the Xbox. However for the Dreamcast and Saturn i use a 14" portable TV with RGB Scart and find this to be the best compromise.

Interestingly I am using a spectrum emulator call "Spectaculator" which emulates a CRT on a LCD Monitor and does a really convincing job. Wouldn't it be good if there was some hardware solution that would produce an effect like this so we could use our old consoles on LCD's and have them look like CRT's

The greek-sounding shop has 7 traditional CRTs still in its inventory. You could get a 14" for £50 or a 21" for £100.

There are plenty on Auction sites but most of them are pick up only but you may get lucky in your area.

I was lucky and managed to get a brand new Samsung 21" crt slimfit TV which is great for my PS2 and SNES.

You will be lucky to get a new CRT these days but a lot of people are getting rid of them for LCD screens so there are plenty of second hand ones.

I tried everything to get my old consoles to look good on my LCD or monitor and it's just a no go.

A good 4:3 CRT TV cannot be beaten for retro gaming.

That is expensive for old tech. Honestly you should check around town. You can get a second user 30 inch crt for like £30 or less.

Still think you cant beat a good quality CRT for gaming.

I still use my Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SB and think i payed around £400 for it when it first came out! Crazy price but it can handle good res. with good refresh rates, uses aperture-grille and I still havent seen an LCD what comes close to it for gaming. Highest refresh rate is 120 herts at 1024x768 and 85 at 1600x1200.

It looks ugly (although it does look really "retro") but Id rather have an ugly box on the desk what does a great job, than a nice thin display which sometimes cant.
