The last piece of the puzzle in my new build is the memory. Components I've singled out so far are:

Asus Maximus IV Extreme
i5 2500k
Spire Thermax Eclipse II
GTX 570
Crucial M4 SSD

I'm thinking 8Gb will be fine but I might add another down the line. The rig will mainly be for gaming. So what's the best memory to get for this build?

Correct me if I am wrong (stulid? :p) but pretty much any 1600MHz ~9,9,9,24 RAM is fine for SB, although getting DIMMs with funky heatspreaders that match your colour scheme is essential. 8GB should be a minimum really as it is so cheap

Any C9 1600MHz RAM is fine as long as you stick to the well known manufacturers (for reliability and warranty) and it can run at ~1.5V.

It depends on what you mean by "funky".

RAM with tall heat spreaders is bad as it can interfere with some CPU coolers.

Low profile RAM, such as Corsair XMS3 or Kingston HyperX, is the safe choice if using a heatsink cooler.

Edit:

OP, at the current price you'd be looking at this:

Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit £35.99

But the weekly offers will change in a few hours time so see what's available when you buy.

I recommend the Corsair XMS3 chips, I have 12GB in my system and they have been rock solid and then some for 12-18 months.

Simply outstanding, they are not the cheapest ones out though so it will depend on your budget but they are not massively expensive either imho.
