Best dedicated server hosting in the UK?

I'm looking for a dedicated server in the UK and have absolutely no idea which companies are trustworthy. I've only ever used cloud-based hosting up until now but I have a requirement for a dedicated host now.

I guess I'd need an up-to-date Xeon CPU with about 32GB of RAM and some fast hard drive storage.

Can anyone make any suggestions at all?

Nimbus Hosting without a doubt hands down the best host I have ever used, and I've been through a lot.

[email protected] is the director, email him and tell him Jon at kindai sent you :)

They are pricier than others, but the quality of service is next to none for a UK host.

Thanks for the reply.

That kinda got me thinking about getting my own server and co-locating it somewhere. There are a few datacentres near where I live. Plus I'd have more freedom about the hardware I deployed which would be useful in the future.

I basically want to be able to host as many virtual machines as possible in the fewest rack units. I'll have to do some research on this to find out what the best deal is for my specific needs.

How about elaborating on the requirement? Xeon+32GB is pretty vague.

You are quite right. I need a dedicated host to run a fleet of virtual machines with about 1GB of RAM each and running CoreOS. I need to fit as many virtual machines as possible on one host computer to keep costs down. I'll be using QEMU and KVM and the host operating system will either be CentOS or Ubuntu LTS.

I want the maximum number of VMs I can get for the least amount of money. I imagine each VM would go for about $8 a month. So extrapolate from there. Sorry. I should have been more explicit.

You want to become an service provider? What are you going to do for bandwidth, security, monitoring, backups etc... ?

Those points aside check out -

Personally, I use scaleway.com but location !=UK

Most colo deals come with bandwidth and physical security and I can handle backups and software monitoring.

I might just stick to using Linode and then resell their services. I have a plan that requires a fair number of virtual machines. I thought I could save money by using a dedicated server but that might just be more problems than it is worth.

Edit: Just checked out Scaleway and that could work. Thanks for the tip.

OVH sell a 2GB VM for £2.99+VAT per month if you want to resell that?

I'll have a look at that but the important thing I need is an API. If I had a dedicated server or colocated a server I would be able to script QEMU and KVM myself so wouldn't need an explicit API for that.

You’re a few months late for the annual summer host influx, but you really should get over to LET and have a good read. What you are doing is done by hundreds of people each year who fail, learn from them and avoid the obvious mistakes they make.

For example why do you believe that a 1GB VPS is worth $8/m from a company that has no trading history? Hetzner offer 10Gb pipes with vastly superior hardware and infrastructure/history for less than that, OVH (SYS/Kinsufi), Myloc (Webtropia/ServDiscount) and Online.net (oneprovider/Scaleway) all offer better deals and again have proven track records, what makes your VPS options ‘special’?

The reason I think I can sell a VPS for $8 a month is that I am building a platform as a service. A customer will select how many VPS instances they require and a link to a Git repository (or any other source code management system) and then I'll deploy it automatically for them. Think of companies like Heroku, Google App Engine, Amazon Elastic Beanstalk. Except I am working in a market that they do not serve.

There is more to the plan, but I'm currently working on the business plan, so my ideas are somewhat fluid at the moment while I do the research.
