Hi Guys,

Wasnt quite sure where to start this thread, hope this is ok,

Basically we are in the development process of a new e-commerce website, and im at the stage now where im looking for a reliable uk host. The current site has about 900+ visitors a day and processes many transactions into sage. The new site will be quite big with many advanced functions and databases.

I would appercaite if you could reccomend a few dedicated server web hosts, which are reasonable with good support.

Thanks,
Patrick

Depends on how much you want to spend really, spec of server and if you want the server in the UK or US. Have you considered a Virtual Private Server ?

Hi Loki,

Yeah we have roughly £200 a month too spend maybe slightly more. We are running on a vps at the momment but this new site wouldnt be able to run on it as it is too big. The site will be hosted in the uk to serve uk & ireland.

Spec ways probably intel quad core, dual hard-drives in raid and 2gb of ram.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I know Axer off here does dedicated server hosting and the price is pretty good. Used him in the past and the network has always been reliable. If you want to see a wider spread of webhosts and their current offers I can advise Web Hosting Talk Although the majority of hosts are US there are still a number of UK hosts on there.

1 & 1 are ok, good network but the customer service is poor imo

1&1 are based in Germany, unless things have changed recently.

I've visited RapidSwitch's data centre which was fine. We have a few servers colocated with them. They own one of BlueSquare's data centres (BlueSquare are their 'landlords') and their pricing is pretty great - although realistically, you're not going to get a decent server running on 0.5A, so expect to pay a bit more than the prices on the website if you go colo.

If you work out the cost of a server over 2 years + monthly colo fees, it's much cheaper than the same spec dedicated server. Especially if you manage to get your servers on BOGOF :p

PoundHost are part of BlueSquare though, so that'd be like going direct with RapidSwitch's landlords.

The real decision is whether you want a server which is managed or a server which is unmanaged.

With a managed server everything is taken care of for you. The provider will monitor the server, proactively rectify any problems, install/update software, make configuration changes at your request and generally let you treat the server like shared hosting only without the sharing.

Or you can spend 1/3rd of the cost on an unmanaged server however, when something goes wrong (other than hardware) at 3am, it's your problem rather than theirs.

Rapidswitch are a strong business and they are good at what they do - extremely low cost unmanaged servers. Over the years they've got very efficient about it. Whether that service is right for you, pcassidy4, is another matter.

Rapidswitch rent the top floor of Bluesquare 2. If you remember your visit, furnace, when you walk in the front door, if instead of going up the stairs to Rapidswitch you walk straight ahead, go through another door and turn right, that's our suite.... and we're certainly not customers of Rapidswitch :D.

If budget allows I'd strongly recommend SCSI for the disks.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the replys,

From what i can see there seems to be a lot resellers of the sames services for a head company. We where looking at the likes of Rackspace but their cheapest server was £480 and its not in the uk but it is managed.

I'd feel more comfortable with a managed server, but there too much choice, im going to take the companys you guys refered and try and narrow it down.

Has anybody hand any experience with don host or webfusion?

Thanks
Patrick
