What is the best diesel motor that will get a move on under 2.5k. Looking for something that won't hang around and be a fairly pleasent driving experience?

Any opinions welcome, I have a few in mind but would like to just hear your opinions on what you guys think are good,

Many Thanks

OP has asked for a diesel, so it would appear to be a fair assumption!

I guess the best options would be something French or a VAG TDI.

You're going to be in something dull or problematic with that budget. I'd take the former and get a passat

Leaves plenty to fix when the go wrong.
They will be under 2.5k and are diesels, which match the requirement.
And saving money seems to be the thing here.

Modern CR diesels will be a pain at this mileage, hence my suggestion of a PD which is relatively bombproof

Im not asking for a supercar! just something that wont struggle in overtaking, yes 2500 not 250 cheers

the 130 passat is perfectly capable. The 406 might be worth a look, the HDi isn't too bad

How many miles are you actually doing though?

A VAG 130 would be the preferred option and they're pretty bombproof. Would expect it to be a leggy example to be within budget tho. Most likely to get a Passat/Bora for the money.

I had a Vectra Estate SRi DTI 130. Got it for £1800 around March. Someone ploughed into the back of it earlier this month and it was written off by the insurance company :(

I'm working on the basis that VW got first dibs on the latest engines as they couldn't build enough 130's. Took SEAT/Skoda a good 2-3 years to get an upgrade from the 110.
The PD 150 made its debut in the Seat Leon Cupra 4 IIRC.
